Balde To Decide For His Playing Career

December 31st, 2007

According to Gordon Strachan, it is the players who decide for their own future with the club. They are open to deals as long as their players are willing, although they also encourage them to stay if they deem it possible. If Bobo Balde decides to stay with the Celtic, then he can do so and the club will be more than supportive with his decision.

The 32-year-old signed a contract with the club until 2009. Many thought that he has played his last game with his team this season, but decided to stay before the last transfer window closed.

Balde fail to spot the start of the 06-07 season subsequent to finding out that he had to undergo surgery because of a unrelenting stomach muscle problem. He returned to the team in the month of November but suffered a broken leg during a match. The Guinea international was sent-off during the first half of the 2-2 draw against Dundee United. He was then ruled out again for several months.

Strachan doesn’t have any regrets about leave-taking Balde on the sidelines pending this week. Balde made his first appearance this season on December 26, 2007 precisely a year after his last, in a 2-0 triumph to Dundee United. His attendance aided Celtic to their first away win in roughly 15 months. He was then awarded “Man Of The Match” for his remarkable performance.

Strachan again emphasized that Balde, who is scheduled to leave for the African Nations Cup after his next two games against Gretna today and against Rangers on January 2, still holds his future in his own hands.

Benitez Still Confident On Winning Premier League Title

December 31st, 2007

Being ten points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is still confident about winning the title this season. After four goalless draws this season putting them ten points behind the leaders and nine points behind Manchester United, Benitez is still bright with assurance. The Reds boss rejects being downcast.

As the January transfer window approaches, he is ready to push into the January transfer market and spend some to overcome the “player crisis” in his club. He has not named names, but he has hinted that he will be ready to spend for noteworthy players for his club. However, unless it is not put on paper, he will still keep on trying to get the right players at the right “restricted price”. According to him, he will do whatever it takes to put things back at their right places.

Indeed, there is no doubting about his credentials. After steering Valencia to a league and UEFA Cup double matching up the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the 03-04 season has been an achievement. Under Benitez’ supervision, it was Valencia’s second La Liga title-win in three years.

Benitez is a perfectionist of some sort and is a very technical coach, which may have resulted to his having a degree in Physical Education. He uses computer technology to keep an eye on his players’ diets and physical progress. His coaching made him the man that he is today. The club is hopeful that he does even better to help out on the team’s way to the top.

Ramos: We Are Not Selling Berbatov

December 30th, 2007

Juande Ramos was firm when he said that it is Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy who will settle on whether Dimitar Berbatov stays with the club or not. After bagging four goals during the 6-4 victory against Reading during the weekend, the Spaniard was one of the many who received accolades from the fans.

It was reported last March that the Tottenham board strained Martin Jol to pick Dimitar Berbatov for FA cup tie against Chelsea. In addition, Berbatov was strongly rumored to be a target for a move to some of Europe’s biggest clubs during the January transfer window.

Berbatov is considered to be one of the most valuable players Tottenham has in possession, so the coach obviously wants to continue to get hold of a treasure which will be to the club’s advantage. Berbatov is also said to be Man Utd boss Ferguson’s favorite, whom he has been eyeing for a long time.

There had been assumptions that Berbatov would be drawn in a big money transfer to Manchester United or Chelsea but he publicly announced that he is very happy with Tottenham. Tottenham have also stated that they have no intent of selling the gifted striker. Berbatov played the new season with information of a gap between him and ex-Spurs manager Martin Jol. Despite this, the striker has been performing really well so far.

Ramos is however determined to keeping Berbatov but the striker’s long-term career still mainly depends if Spurs would get into European championship this season or not.

Ferguson Warns Undisciplined Players

December 30th, 2007

Because of the many issues linked to the Manchester United Premier League club this season, Alex Ferguson has taken the initiative to remind his players to stay out of trouble. If anyone violates his rules on club discipline again, he warned them that he will not hesitate to sell any of the biggest stars he has in his team.

Although he kept his silence on the issues about his club players, he obviously has not been happy about it. After being on the headlines because of a Christmas party dilemma which eventually ended in rape claims, the coach has become impatient with his players’ behavior. They obviously need a little whipping. Until now, Ferguson has declined to comment on the party which led to player Jonny Evans being arrested.

It was reported that the United boss solicited a fine of one million pounds for those players involved in the party. The fine has been the biggest ever given by a Premier league club for breach of discipline. Ferguson has banned conducting any parties whatsoever to avoid unwanted incidents.

The team has been doing well in their previous games although United had their most terrible start of the season under Ferguson suffering a 1-0 defeat in opposition to city rivals Manchester City. However, United improved and triumphed in their next three Premier League matches. Man Utd were victims of a shock outcome when they were defeated ar 2-0 to Championship side Coventry City in the 3rd round of the League Cup in September 2007, subsequent to Ferguson’s fielding a worn-out side which nonetheless incorporated more than a few million pounds-worth of international players such as Wes Brown, Michael Carrick, John O’Shea, Anderson and Nani.

Hodgson Appointed As New Fulham Coach

December 29th, 2007

After his resignation as football team coach of the Finnish team, 60-year old Roy Hodgson has taken over Lawrie Sanchez who was dismissed as Fulham struggle third from the foot of the Premier League. He will be taking his place by the end of December, still with Ray Lewington in-charge of Saturday game against Birmingham City.

Last month, Hodgson announced that he has no plans of signing a new deal with the Finnish national team which he nearly guided to UEFA Euro 2008. He is now to guide Fulham away from the Premier League relegation zone.

In 1994, he became known for steering the Swiss national team during the 1994 World Cup and Euro 1996. Prior to that, Switzerland was not able to qualify for a big tournament since 1960. Apart from that, he has coached many prominent club sides, counting Blackburn Rovers, Copenhagen, Malmö FF, Internazionale, Grasshoppers, F.C. and Udinese.

Hodgson is an affiliate of the FIFA Technical Study Group (TSG) at the 2006 World Cup and has worked numerous times as a member of UEFA’s technical study group at the European Championships. He has served as a television expert in more than a few of the countries where which he has coached also.

Being in his 60’s, this will probably be the last time that Hodgson will be given the chance to prove his worth and talent as a coach. The Finnish team that he had just abandoned regrets losing a great coach such as Hodgson. Fulham, however, is looking forward to being steered away from the relegation line this season.

Lehmann Contemplates Future With Arsenal

December 29th, 2007

As many of us know, German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been away from the limelight because of some poor performances and injuries this season. He has been trying to consider his future with Arsenal way ahead on the January transfer window. Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger, however, is determined to make Lehmann stay with the team.

Although the boss admittedly said that if an offer does come, they will sit together and talk about it, he encourages Lehmann to first think if he wants to stay with the team or not. Personally, he would rather prefer Lehmann to stay with Arsenal.

Manuel Almunia has always been the choice for the starting line-up this season, which has brought disappointment for Lehmann. He has lost his place and is well aware that he must first achieve his first-team football to be his country’s representative at Euro 2008 this summer. He admits that he is having a difficult future with Arsenal.

Lehmann signed with Arsenal July 25, 2003 as a substitute for David Seaman, and played every game as Arsenal went undefeated for the entire 2003–04 FA Premier League. They became the first English club to complete this achievement since 1880. Lehmann’s style of play often came out of his goal to interrupt passes occasionally leading to faults, similar to what happened during the game with local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

His contract at Arsenal was apt to expire summer of 2007. During the 06–07 season, there was much gossip that he would depart the club on a Bosman transfer. On April 26, 2007, however, he signed a year’s expansion on his contract until 2008.

Cole and Knight Plead Red Cards

December 28th, 2007

After two red cards awarded yesterday during the 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge to both Ashley Cole and Zat Knight of Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively, both pleaded to the Football Association Thursday to have their red cards taken from Wednesday’s match. If upheld, a red card will be tantamount to a 3-match ban for both players.

Phil Dowd, the referee during the game, sent off Cole during the last minute for a handball on the Chelsea goal-line, yielding a penalty which made Gareth Barry earn a point for Aston Villa. Cole was dismissed during injury time near the end of the second half after he was believed to have held the ball on the line, though replays show it may in point of fact have only struck his shoulder. On the other hand, Knight was dismissed because of a foul on Michael Ballack, giving Chelsea a penalty while Aston Villa was leading with 2-0.

Chelsea manager Avram Grant was unwavering that his player didn’t deserve any penalty during the game. The Football Association announced today that they have received a petition for Cole’s card to be withdrawn. Villa manager Martin O’Neill also believes that the German midfielder lunged but only denied it. Ballack however believes that he had the ball and two guys from his rivals pushed him, which for him was a clear penalty.

Both will find out what is in store for them this coming Friday on the Football Association hearing. Both managers and teams are firm with their claims and beliefs to protect their players.

Barton Arrested Again

December 28th, 2007

Not to many people’s surprise, 25-year old Joey Barton, Newcastle and England midfielder was again taken into police custody after an alleged assault early Thursday morning. Barton has had a significant history of disciplinary problems in the past years including an assault charge after attacking former Manchester City team mate, a bar fight, taking part on a racist attack, putting a lit cigar into the eye of a team mate and starting a brawl on the field during a pre-season friendly against Doncaster in 2004. It seems like people have been used to the young fellow’s getting into trouble.

Barton was arrested together with two other young fellows whose charges were linked with the same incident. 19-year old Andrew Barton from Widnes has been charged with actual physical harm and fight and has been released on bail while 27-year old Nadine Wilson from Huyton, Merseyside has also been charged with common assault and affray and was likewise released on bail. The three are all summoned to attend a hearing at theLiverpool City Magistrates Court on Friday.

Barton was never far away from controversy in the past two years, earning him even more criticisms from the club’s fans. During the final straw for Barton, he was drawn in a training ground brawl with team-mate Ousmane Dabo resulting to the Frenchman’s hospital treatment due to an injury. Barton was then suspended by his own club because of his behavior. Last June 2007, he left his club to sign for Newcastle United for £5.5m.

King To Return After A Knee Injury

December 27th, 2007

Tottenham manager Juande Ramos couldn’t have been any happier after a 5-1 win against Fullham and Ledley King’s return to the football club. These two things made his day just as perfect as he wished. Although the return is not yet a hundred percent sure, he is anticipating it if the medics allow him to, which will be King’s first appearance this season. He has been away since June after a knee injury and a thigh problem. King’s development will be monitored over the next few days to see to it that his knee is well enough to play for the team again, although the team is expecting for his return next week to play in the home game in opposition to Reading or at Aston Villa. King is looking forward to a continuous improvement about his injury to do away with more damages, considering his performance being awfully affected by his injuries.

Ledley is the longest-serving member and captain of the Tottenham Hotspur’s playing staff. It was in July 1997 when he signed as a trainee and improved in his rank as he made his first-team debut as a half-time alternative in a 3-2 rout to Liverpool May 1999.

Ledley failed to play over a long term this 2006-07 because of a foot injury, but managed to go back to the side for the last month of the season and helped guarantee a UEFA Cup qualification for the second season. He then was included in the England squad against Brazil and Estonia for the end-of-season internationals.

Man Utd Takes the Lead; Wenger Undaunted

December 27th, 2007

Boss Arsene Wenger is undaunted by the lead Manchester United has taken over the Premier League. After their 4-0 win against Sunderland and after Arsenal’s draw with Portsmouth, the boss still believes his club will be able to take the lead again in due time. According to him, a point behind their rival doesn’t make a big difference.

Man Utd is now leading with 45 points after their fifth straight victory, Arsenal behind with 44, Chelsea 38, Liverpool with 36 and Manchester City at the foot with 34.

It was Arsenal’s first time not to score in the league this season. The team feels that they should have won the game considering their control of the second half but was stuck with Portsmouth’s tactics, missing the chance of regaining the top spot that they have been looking forward to. The game ended with no hit whatsoever, contrary to what Arsenal showed at the start of the game.

Portsmouth certainly made the game difficult for Arsenal, given their performance during the game. The team played with ten players and surely made the most out of it. Overall, the game was thrilling. Arsenal obviously weren’t at their best condition, but they obviously gave it their best shot.

With Manchester leading, the changes has made Premier league even more thrilling as the fans anticipate and bet for what is to happen next. The title race is far from over, and with the single point lead Man Utd has taken over Arsenal, we’ll never know what is to happen next.
