Pennant raring to break into Liverpool’s first team

September 25th, 2008

Jermaine Pennant, who might not be a name striking in our mind thanks to his rather occasional presence in the Liverpool’s first team, has now decided to go for a regular first team spot.

According to Pennant, Liverpool is a big club and breaking into the first team is of course a difficult job. However, he is determined to keep coming back till he is a part of the regular squad.

Without any doubt, breaking into the first eleven, while there are wingers like Nabil El Zahr, Albert Riera and Dirk Kyut in the squad, is quite difficult.

If the recent form of the midfield menace (for rival defenders) is to be seen, he seems to be quite in contention for a regular spot.

He had a great night out on Tuesday in the field, as Liverpool won a Carling Cup 3rd round tie against Crewe 2-1. One of the goals came from his assist.

During the game, his exploits on the right flank reminded one and all of the promise he showed when he became the costliest trainee of English history in 1998.

Before the recently concluded transfer window, the winger was expected to move out of Anfield due to the lesser number of chances he had. However, he is now fully confident of getting as many starts as possible.

Meanwhile, Reds’ manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that he wants to extend center back Daniel Agger’s contract at the club.

Denmark international still has a year and a half remaining to play at Anfield, but Benitez seems quite in a hurry to get the deal done.

Giggs: I can sense the Cup Catalyst in our game

September 25th, 2008

After a poor start to the premiership season, Manchester United seems to be getting back on track.

Ryan Giggs, Devils midfielder, said that though the club had an awful start, good form is visible in their play.

After two consecutive draws in Champions League & Premier Leagues matches against Villarreal and Chelsea respectively, the Old Trafford club scored a 3-1 victory over 10-men Middlesbrough on their home turf in the 3rd round of Carling Cup.

Although United currently are positioned fifteenth in the Premier League season with 5 points from 4 games, Giggs said ‘Cup catalyst is now visible in our game and we are in a position to show the same vigor that was the essence of a victorious outing during the previous season.’

‘We have the potential to win 10-15 games on a trot, whether home or away. Yes, the caliber of our opponents cannot be overlooked. Still when we are playing at our best, nothing can stop us.’

Ronaldo also made a much-awaited return to the Starting XI of Manchester United in the Cup tie and scored with a header much to the delight for the home fans.

With Bolton Wanderers also having a poor time in the Premier League, things could not have gone worse as they will be facing a revitalized Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping that United will be able to finish the coming games better, after starting impressively in the last two games in the Premier League against Liverpool & Chelsea.

Arsenal’s team meeting sheet ‘leaked’ ahead of Carling Cup match

September 24th, 2008

A motivational team meeting sheet, which was handed to Arsenal players before their match against Watford, has been leaked in the media.

The sheet was just a small paper with motivational and team-spirited ‘thoughts’, probably been written by a psychologist.

Arsenal had played two difficult away games in a few days’ span, and the team was facing a tough task going to face Bolton at Reebok Stadium.

The motivational sheet had two main parts: the first was about what a team is, and the second part about various encouraging instructions & suggestions to the players stating what to do and what not to do as a team and as individuals.

While many world class managers make their players go mad with full-on details of the other team’s style of play and individual statistics, this sheet was quite small in comparison.

Things like never giving up and being a part of the team through thick and thin were the main agenda of the sheet.

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger was today ‘attacked’ by the UEFA head Michel Platini on his support for introduction of video replays to improve refereeing decisions in the game. He was blamed for having a business mentality rather than a football one.

Meanwhile, Arsenal is set to play their round-of-32 match against Sheffield United today in the Carling Cup.

Arsene Wenger is almost sure to set up the youngest side ever to feature in the League Cup, with Wales U-21 Aaron Ramsey, 16 year old Jack Wilshere, Keiran Gibbs and reserves captain Gavin Hoyte.

FA: Too early to comment on the failure of ‘Respect’

September 24th, 2008

FA has remained totally committed for their initiative to have the referees respected despite their campaign took a major battering during two games in the previous week.

Brian Barwick, who will be leaving his post as chief executive in a short time, launched the campaign ‘Respect’ in the early part of the year.

Barwick claimed that it was his intentions for getting players into behaving better with the match officials. He also wanted them to work with the referees and avoid arguments and haranguing them.

The outgoing chief executive also wanted captains of the clubs to speak with referees only following any contentious decision.

Although this scheme was highly praised initially, major flashpoints of angry exchanges were seen during games at Vicarage Road and Stamford Bridge during the weekend. This has made many experts to believe that ‘Respect’ is dead and might not make a comeback until some strict action is taken.

However, FA vehemently has disputed their views. They feel that it is far too soon for making a judgment on this regard.

According to FA officials, though incidents didn’t make pretty viewing, it is felt that Respect might be working, as it took the edge off all the reactions during the weekend games.

There is no doubt to the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t hit back at referee Mike Riley in a manner, which he could have done for the officiating during Chelsea-United game.

Watford players also showed restrained behavior, as it could have been far worse considering they conceded a goal, which clearly was a shot almost a yard of their post.

FA spokesman said ‘’Respect’ is a long term commitment for improving the behavior of players on the field and we should not allow negative points of individual incidents to ruin its impact.’

Hughes: Robinho is quickly proving his worth

September 23rd, 2008

After yesterday’s 6-0 thrashing of Portsmouth in a packed City of Manchester stadium, Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has put faith in his team, and has specially praised Robinho for his performance. He said that Brazilian has been rather quick in proving his worth.

Robinho joined the Eastlands side on the same day, when the club was taken over by the the Abu Dhabi United Group. It was also the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

Robinho, along with Stephen Ireland, was one of the motivations during the six goal triumph over Pompey. His good team work and two goals from three matches have earned him good love and respect from City faithful.

According to Hughes, Robinho is not only technically an outstanding player, but he has got a great work ethic and an understanding of the game.

Hughes insists that the Brazilian has got the right mix of skill and application required at the highest level.

In the meantime, City’s new chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has inspired new hope by saying that the club still has a lot of hidden potential, which will surface in the coming time.

Al Mubarak insisted that the United Group is working for the long term development of the club.

The new manager also highlighted the role played by some of the players including Vincent Kompany, Stephen Ireland and Robinho.

A new on-the-field partnership between Ireland and Robinho is increasingly becoming the headache of rival defenders, even though the two are unable to communicate in the same language!

Carvalho sidelined with damaged ligament

September 23rd, 2008

Knee injury of Ricardo Carvalho can rule him out for the coming month, which has given a major setback to Barclays Premier League title challenge of Chelsea.

30-year old suffered damage in medial collateral ligament during his side’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Carvalho was taken off only after 12 minutes of the clash.

Medical staffs of the Blues have estimated that the trouble might keep the player out of action for at least 3-4 weeks.

Another Chelsea player, Deco, suffered an injury during warm-up. According to officials, this tear in thigh muscle of Portuguese star might take at least a fortnight for getting fully healed.

Chelsea Boss Luiz Felipe Scolari might not be worried for Deco, as he has got an adequate replacement in the form of Brazilian Mineiro, who is a free agent at Stamford Bridge.

However, ‘Big Phil’ will be worried for the loss that he has suffered in the form of Carvalho. Despite a solid performance from Alex in the drawn game, he might not give relief to Scolari.

With Essien, who is out for six months, also on the injured list for Chelsea, Former Brazil’s World Cup winning manager has a lot to think about in the coming months.

Speaking to the press, Scolari said ‘The speed and reaction of Carvalho is praiseworthy.’

‘The sense of smelling a ball in his vicinity is a gift that only he has. I have even seen him guess the move of forward players from their footwork. His absence will be a big loss in the coming games.’

If Carvalho takes a full month break, he will either be back during the Champions League tie against Roma or the all-important Liverpool game in the Premier League.

Manchester City Vs Portsmouth: Scintillating display leads to 6-0 win for City

September 22nd, 2008

The match between Manchester City and Portsmouth at City of Manchester Stadium ended in a perfect goal fest for the Eastlands club and a humiliation for Pompey.

The big point of the 6-0 win was that all the six goals came from six different City players, which included two from substitutes.

Portsmouth Manager, Harry Redknapp, started with a seemingly strange 3-5-2 formation and the three man defense had the toughest time of all the players in the two teams.

Pompey Goalie David James also had a disastrous game against his former club and must have been relieved beyond anything at the final whistle.

He made two fantastic saves early in the game, but that was just not enough as City pressed harder and harder to end the deadlock.

The scoring spree started early in the thirteenth minute, when Brazilian forward Jo side footed James and rounded an easy ball into the empty net.

Richard Dunne scored in the 20th minute as a corner was deflected by James, which made the score at half time read 2-0.

In the second half, Robinho netted in the 57th minute and strikes from former Chelsea man Shawn Wright Philips (68’) and subs Chad Evans (78’) and Fernandes Gelson (83’) contributed to the City’s impressive show in front of their home fans.

In another match, Juande Ramos’ Tottenham Hotspurs were held to a goal less draw at White Hart Lane by Wigan Athletic. Thus, Spurs continued their disappointing run in the Premier League. They only have two points from five completed games.

Manchester United Vs Chelsea: United fails to capitalize on good start

September 22nd, 2008

It was probably one of the games of the seasons at Stamford Bridge, as holders Manchester United took on Chelsea, who had an 85-games unbeaten record at their home ground.

Despite poor form in recent games, Red Devils started on a positive note and got the home side on the back foot for the first time in a long while.

Although Ronaldo and Tevez were not a part of the playing eleven, still the likes of Hargreaves, Park and Fletcher made life difficult for Chelsea defenders.

Blues, on the other hand, had a bad start to the game with Deco injured during practice session before the game and defender Ricardo Carvalho hobbled off only after 12 minutes.

Rooney, Fletcher and Ferdinand had attempts at the goal, but Petr Cech was tough to beat. Even though United players were able to penetrate the defenders, but Cech (with wobbles) was able to stop them from scoring.

However in the eighteenth minute, Cech wobbled a shot from Berbatov after a pinpoint pass from Evra and Park was there to make it 1-0 for the away side.

Like the Liverpool game, Devils lacked finishing in this game or it could have been an easy win for them. In the end, things could have been worse, if Chelsea would have been alive to the situation.

After constant attack on United’s goal through Anelka, Cole, Ballack and Lampard, substitute Kalou scored the equalizer heading a Mikel’s free kick in 80th minute.

Manchester United, who had 7 bookings during the game, ended the drawn game (1-1) with Ferdinand showing bad temper to referee Mike Riley for his improper handling of situations during the match.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa continued their good run in the league by beating West Brom 2-1 at The Hawthorns. Another game saw Hull salvaging a point in a 2-2 draw against an inconsistent Everton at Kingston Communications Stadium.

Arsenal Vs Bolton Wanderers: Gunners moves to top position with 3-1 win

September 21st, 2008

Arsenal continued their winning run in the Premier League and moved to the top of the tables after they defeated Bolton Wanderers 3-1 at Reebok Stadium.

London Club, now, has 12 points from 5 completed games. Chelsea, who is positioned third after Liverpool, has a game in hand against Manchester United and can still regain the top position.

It looked like Bolton will continue their streak against Arsenal at Reebok Stadium, when striker Kevin Davies’s header went past Alumina to take the home side ahead in the 14th minute.

However, Arsenal fought back with 2 goals in span of 2 minutes to take the game away from Bolton. First it was Emmanuel Eboue in the 26th minute and then it was Nicklas Bendtner, who hit the net in the 27th minute.

Although Kevin Nolan, Bolton Captain, tried to chip a ball over Alumina, but the Spanish keeper was quick to react and saved a possible equalizer.

Arsenal’s victory was confirmed when Denilson scored from an Adebayor’s pass to make it 3-1 for the away side.

This result is just what Arsene Wenger, Arsenal Boss, was looking for. Now with Liverpool held to a goalless draw by Stoke City at Anfield and a crucial encounter between United and Chelsea not that far away, his prediction of holding on to the lead might come true.

Elsewhere, Blackburn defeated Fulham 1-0 at Ewood Park to have seven points from 5 games. Newcastle United, a club without any manager, continued their poor run, when they lost 3-1 to Hammers at Upton Park.

Roy Keane’s Sunderland also scored their second victory of the season after defeating Middlesbrough 2-0 at the Stadium of Lights.

West Ham United Vs Newcastle United: Zola-powered Hammers snubs Magpies 3-1

September 21st, 2008

West Ham United had the best of times in their first league match with new manager Gianfranco Zola, as they defeated a club playing without manager, Newcastle United, 3-1 at Upton Park.

Italian David Di Michele scored two goals and Matthew Etherington netted home once to bag the three goals for the Hammers.

In the seventh minute, Michele was set up by Noble into the box, just for Shay Given to make a trademark reaction save with his head. But the ball went straight back to Michele, who slammed it onto Steven Taylor and a deflection went in.

The other goal from Michele came in the dying stages of the first half, and just after the break, Matthew Etherington scored from an unselfish cross by Michele to make it 3-0 for the Hammers.

The only goal for Newcastle, though nothing more than a consolation, came in the 66th minute from Michael Owen, as he bended a superb effort into the right corner.

Just after this goal, Cacapa almost squeezed one in, but a wonderful save by Green, who had just lost his clean sheet opportunity, made it a disappointment.

He made another save off Damien Duff, keeping out a low range drive from him.

Some great saves by Given proved why he is an asset to Newcastle all the time. Had he not been there for the Magpies, the score line would have been a disaster.

The man of the moment for Hammers was not any player, but the Coach Zola, who impressed in his first match.

Meanwhile, Sunderland scored a convincing 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough at the Stadium of lights. However, Liverpool lost two important points when they were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City.
