Premier League, La Liga and Serie A updates

October 3rd, 2009

Manchester United faced their first draw this season at the hands of Sunderland at Old Trafford. Sunderland opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Bent amazed Foster with his one touch bolt into the bottom left corner of the goal post. Second half saw an attacking United side. In the 51st minute Nani’s cross was curled in by a Berbatov scissor kick. Jones scored in the 58th minute giving back Sunderland their lead.

The match could have easily ended as United’s second loss this season if it was not for Anton Ferdinand’s own goal in the injury time of second half. Portsmouth scored their first points this season with a 0-1 away win over Wolves.

Tottenham Hotspurs came from behind twice in  match against Bolton Wanderers to register a 2-2 away draw. Burnley defeated Birmingham 2-1 in a match where two newly promoted clubs contested. Hull City kept their last week’s 1-6 drubbing  at the hands of Liverpool aside by registering a 2-1 home win over Wigan Athletic.

I don’t remember when was the last time Barelona had a 1-0 win at Camp Nou. Tonight they registered a 1-0 victory over Almeria. Tenerife were defeated 0-1 at home at the hands of Deportivo La Coruna whereas Atletico Madrid registered a 2 – 1 home win against Zaragoza.

Inter Milan were saved from humiliation when Sneijder scored the winner in the last minute of the home match against Udinese and gave the angry fans something to cheer for. The win took Inter to the top of the table with 16 points and a point clear to second placed Sampdoria who play their game tomorrow against Parma at home. Bari drew 0-0 against Catania, much to the home fans frustration as their team was unable to take the maximum points.

League Cup Updates

September 23rd, 2009

The third round of the League cup saw the big England teams, Arsenal, and Liverpool, going through to the next round. Arsenal defeated West Brom 2-0 at the Emirates stadium. Ex gunner, Jerome Thomas of West Brom was shown a red card by referee L Mason in the 37th minute for slapping Jack Wilshere of Arsenal. This left West Brom with 10 men to play the remaining 53 minutes.

The score at half time remained 0-0 but the outnumbered West Brom squad were not able to hold the gunners for long. A goal each from Sanchez Watt, and Carlos Vela made sure that Arsenal goes through the next round. Arsene Wenger had promised a young Arsenal team would start for the League cup encounter, and accordingly the average age of the team for the night was 20 years.

Elsewhere, Leeds United was hosting Liverpool. The match ended with a 0-1 win for Liverpool. 20 year old French striker David Ngog scored the only goal of the game in the 66th minute. Newly demoted Newcastle United lost against Peterborough United 2-0. The Newcastle fans faced a big question of whether their side will again play in the Premier League next season. Sunderland defeated newly promoted side Birmingham City 2-0 in an encounter which saw two Premier League clubs clashing for a place in the next round. Elsewhere, Bolton Wanderers defeated West Ham 3-1.

Other matches of the night saw Barnsley defeating Burnley 3-2, Carlisle United losing 1-3 against Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest losing 0-1 against Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City defeating Blackpool 4-3, and Scunthorpe United winning 2-0 against Port Vale.

Portsmouth v Bolton Wanderers

September 10th, 2009

One thing is definite about Saturday’s encounter between Portsmouth and Bolton as the Premier League resumes after the international break – one, or both, of the teams will break their duck. The pair are stuck at the bottom of the league table as the only two teams that are pointless, but whereas hapless Portsmouth have played four games, Bolton have only played three.

The way things have started for Portsmouth this season, both on and off the pitch, suggest that the team are going to struggle badly this term and will be facing a battle for their Premier League lives. All the off-field shenanigans over the ownership of the club, and the exodus of players during the wrangle, have seen the side decimated with manager’s Paul Hart’s hands well and truly tied.

With players of the calibre of Glenn Johnson, Peter Crouch, Sean Davis and Sylvan Distin all being allowed to leave over the summer, and the loss of Jermaine Defoe in last January’s transfer window, Portsmouth have had to make up the numbers with a rash of free signings and loans which have not gone down too well with the Pompey faithful.

Bolton have also started the season poorly and manager Gary Megson is already under early pressure. After losing the first two games of the current campaign 1-0 (to Sunderland at home and then Hull away), the team faced a Liverpool side at the Reebok last time out that was rumoured to be in turmoil, and these rumours looked well founded when Bolton took a 2-1 lead in the game. Nevertheless, Liverpool are renowned for their comebacks and eventually won the game 3-2, sending the Bolton fans home in despair.

Bolton v Liverpool

August 28th, 2009

Two clubs in the grip of a “mini-crisis” go head to head at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday. Bolton, winless and pointless after two games of the current Premier League season take on the pre-season title favourites Liverpool, who look anything but at the moment. With two defeats from their first three games, the Reds have now lost as many games as they did in the entire 2008-09 campaign.

Although many point to Rafa Benitez’ decision to sell Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid in the summer as the catalyst for their poor form so far (although this could be a contributing factor), it is the once solid defence that are taking all the flak for the worrying displays, having conceded five goals in their first three games.

The lack of cash on offer for Benitez to buy a couple class players, despite the £30million received for Alonso, is all too evident, but to his credit the Liverpool boss is not using this as an excuse. Although too early to write off Liverpool’s chances of winning the league, they will have to improve dramatically if they don’t want to find themselves cut off from the leading pack.

Gary Megson’s Bolton are also struggling for form this season. In their first two games they have lost both 1-0; the first one at home to Sunderland on the opening day of the season, and the second away to Hull. They did enjoy a midweek victory – by 1-0 – away at Tranmere in the Carling Cup.

Wenger: There is no pressure on our strikers

February 27th, 2009

Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager, maintained that there ‘no major problem’ in regards to the goal scoring form of his club and backed them to perform in the coming games.

Gunners, who are going to host Fulham on Saturday, will be looking to extend their 14-match unbeaten streak following their 1-0 victory over Roma in the Champions League.

However, Wenger’s men are also yet to scored a goal for three games, with the last time being against Bolton going as far back as January 10.

This inability to convert opportunities has proved to be quite costly for them, as they have slipped to the fifth position on the table. Now, they have a long way (6 points) to cover the gap from the side immediate above them.

However, Wenger insists that there is no reason for them to hit the panic button as of yet.

Wenger said, ‘We never put pressure on players missing out on goal scoring opportunities. We know that if we force them to perform, they may break due to pressure. All we do is keep reminding them of their quality.’

‘I know teams, who have conceded goals in final few minutes of the game on a regular basis, after their manager kept pressing them to improve their defense.’

‘So, what I feel the best situation in such a scenario is to be spontaneous and natural. Sometimes, you’ve got to take the decision from the problem and think of playing to the best of our ability.’

‘There have been periods where we decimated our opponents. Now, we’ve happened to hit a slump where we are scoring less. But, this is how the game always folds up. Like other sports, football is a great leveler and our recent performance is an example of that!’

Bolton Wanderers Vs Manchester United: Last minute winner takes United to the top

January 18th, 2009

Last minute header from Dimitar Berbatov helped Manchester United register a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium. As a result of this win, Red Devils moved to the top of the Premier League table for the first time in this season.

Jussi Jaaskelainen, Bolton goalkeeper, was flawless throughout the game and almost denied their opponents with an excellent individual display.

However, after repelling 3 vicious free-kicks from Cristiano Ronaldo, Jaaskelainen was unable to stop a powerful header from Berbatov from six-yard range.

With another clean sheet, Manchester United also equalized Chelsea’s record of 10 games without conceding a goal.

Meanwhile, Blues were saved from another defeat at Stamford Bridge at the hands of Stoke City.

Juliano Belletti and Frank Lampard scored in the final eight minutes of the game after Stoke took the lead through Delap, as Chelsea overcame their opponents 2-1.

Aston Villa continued to hold their fourth position on the table with a 2-1 win over Sunderland at Stadium of Lights.

Captain Gareth Barry scored a penalty for 10-man Villa in the 80th minute to take his side through.

Arsenal also kept their hopes alive of winning the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Hull City at KC Stadium.

Elsewhere at City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester City announced possibility of a Kaka move and celebrated the news with a 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

Relegation Zone continued to be a talked about portion on the table, as both West Bromwich and Blackburn Rovers scored 3-0 victory at home. Difference between the bottom 10 clubs in the League continues to be a worry for their managers.

Megson: Reds will win the league

November 15th, 2008

Gary Megson, Bolton boss, believes that Liverpool has the potential to continue their wonderful season and win their first Premier League crown since 1990.

Reds head to Reebok Stadium for a match against Bolton on Saturday as the joint leaders in Barclays Premier League table alongside Chelsea.

In recent times, Rafael Benitez’s men have effectively lost out of form at these stages in the season.
However, Megson is very much confident that Anfield club has the quality, which can take them full distance in this season.

Megson said, ‘Liverpool are always counted amongst the genuine contenders for the title, but this time around they have the support of a very good start.’

‘With top-class players always been a part of the side for last 40-50 years, they play under great expectations.’

‘They are expected of being in Champions League and winning Premier League. Now with such a start, they have the capability of converting this year.’

‘It seems unbelievable that such a talented side hasn’t won a league in 18 years. Although they’ve won several cups in this period, but it’s the league win that teams get judged by.’

Megson has great respect for the most successful club of Britain. He admires their desire and discipline, which Benitez has instilled in them.

‘They’ve world-class talent backed by an excellent coach, who has got them working on high work ethics. They seem very much settled and are flying.’

‘They’re organized and have the discipline, which is required for making it big in the league or any other tournament.’

Arsenal Vs Manchester United: Red Devils again fail to win at Emirates

November 9th, 2008

Wenger’s boys lived up to his expectations, as Arsenal defeated Manchester United in another scintillating and high voltage match at the Emirates Stadium.

After a 4-4 draw with Tottenham and a defeat against Stoke, Arsenal’s morale was low. However, this fantastic win had not only lifted their spirits, but also lifted them above Man-U in EPL.

Full credit of Gunners’ 2-1 win goes to Samir Nasri. Although Rafael De Silva did get one back in the final stages of the game, but it was all too late for the Red Devils.

Everton got back from behind to crush West Ham 3-1 at Upton Park with all the three goals coming between a span of 83rd and 87th minute.

Hammers’ Jack Collision scored the opener for the home side in the 53rd minute. However, Everton came up with an equalizer through Joleon Lescott in the 83rd minute, which was followed by two consecutive goals from Louis Saha in 85th and 87th minute.

At the Stadium of Lights, Defoe gifted Tony Adams his first victory when Portsmouth managed a 2-1 victory over Sunderland. It was an injury time penalty from Jermain Defoe, which snatched his team 3 important points.

Fans at Kingston Communication Stadium saw Bolton hand another defeat to Hull, as Matt Taylor scored the goal in the 50th minute of the game that ended 1-0.

Again, Liverpool thrashed West Brom by 3 goals at Anfield. Roby Keane scored in the 34th and 43rd minute and the third came from Arbeloa in the dying stages to see the game end at 3-0.

Wigan Athletic and Stoke City were unable to break the deadlock, as their game at JJB Stadium ended in a goalless draw.

Bolton Wanderers Vs Manchester City: Bolton holds their head high with 2-0 win

November 3rd, 2008

It was an evening to remember for Bolton manager, Gary Megson, as his team clenched its first home victory since the start of the season.

Manchester City, on the other hand, failed again to win an away match and kept on their sloppy run in this season.

The match was evenly poised throughout with City keeping up with their normal game by having their ace weapon Robinho do the firing. However, that was not enough as they missed opportunities and great saves made it difficult for the visitors to score.

At every moment, City seemed to be playing a dominant game with Robinho threatening the Bolton posts several times.

However, this did little to undermine the spirit of the home team, who seemed to lack the skill of the Brazilian, but made it up through their determination.

It was not until thirteen minutes before the final time that the home side scored a breakthrough and gained the edge. Fans at Reebok Stadium saw the first goal from their home team after 5 hours and 50 minutes of play.

Nolan’s pass allowed Steinsson to get the ball in the clear and create a wonderful low scoring chance for Gardner, who played a perfect shot with his left foot in the crossbar.

The final nail on the coffin was hit by City captain Richard Dunne, who sent the ball rolling into his own net, from the low cross of Gardner in the 88th minute.

This ensured Bolton’s 2-0 victory and helped them in rolling up from the bottom of the ranking board.

Woodgate: We aren’t too good to go down

October 24th, 2008

Jonathan Woodgate, Spurs defender, has slammed his teammates for underperforming and said that they ‘aren’t too good for going down.’

Woodgate was furious after his side gifted a goal to Udinese in their UEFA Cup encounter, when Heurelho Gomes made a reckless challenge in the box that resulted in a penalty for the opponents.

In the same game, Spurs’ Jamie O’Hara got 2 yellow cards within a span of one minute and was given the marching orders adding to the woes of the London club.

Now, Spurs are having huge deficits to overcome in Europe. Currently, they are languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table and fighting for relegation.

While speaking to reporters, a frustrated Woodgate said ‘We are currently in a battle to save relegation. We need to start winning consistently.’

‘We really need to start working with one another, if we want our season to improve.’

‘There are some players requiring a telling-off for getting back in shape. Presently, we are not doing it.’

‘Although we always spread the word in the team that it is a must-win game, still the needed results are missing.’

‘With 2 points only from 8 games, we are currently in a relegation battle and it does no justice to the fact that our side is one of the most talented ones in the League.’

‘We have the potential of getting out from this slump, if all our players start to fully concentrate in their game. Even, we have time in our hands. However if things don’t go accordingly, we are sure to go down.’

Spurs is going to face a trio of their foes in the Premier League within the next 9 days, in the form of Bolton, Arsenal & Liverpool.
