Today in Premier League

October 4th, 2009

It was all blues at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-0 and regained the top spot in the league table. Though Chelsea had a better side on paper than Liverpool, it took Chelsea 60 minutes to actually prove that they were better than the reds on the pitch.

Drogba probably settled the debate for now, regarding who is the best striker in the Premier League. Both goals that Chelsea scored this afternoon were assisted by Drogba. Anelka scored the first and the second was added in the last minute by substitute Malouda. Liverpool hardly troubled the South Londoners as their star player Torres failed miserably.

Arsene Wenger got the perfect gift for completing 13 years as Arsenal’s boss in England’s Premier League. The North Londoners defeated Blackburn Rovers 6-2 at the Emirates. Fans were shocked when Zonzi scored the first goal for Blackburn inside 4 minutes. Vermaelen equalized in the 17th minute but Blackburn took the lead again in the 30th minute with a goal from Dunn.

Arsenal seemed in no mood of giving up as the last hour of the game saw 5 different Arsenal players getting on the score sheet. Persie and Arshavin scored before half time making sure that they go into break with a lead. Fabregas, Walcott and Bendtner did their bit for the afternoon in the second half.

Everton and West Ham managed to score a point at home this afternoon after a draw against Stoke City and Fulham respectively. The hammers equalized in the last minute against 10 men Fulham as Stanislas made sure that his club scored a point.

Earlier in the 10th minute, Acimovic failed to score a spot kick after his team Austria Vienna were awarded a penalty. Werder Bremen continued their winning run as they defeated Spanish club Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in front of home fans.

Cheslea faced defeat for the first time this season at the JJB stadium playing against Wigan Athletic. Wigan opened score in the 16th minute with a header from Bramble. Chelsea equalized two minutes into the second half with a goal from Drogba but Wigan’s attempt to score in the 52nd minute saw Petr Cech bringing Rodallega down in the box. Cech was shown a straight red card which left reserve keeper Hilario with the job of saving the penalty. Rodallega stepped up and took the penalty which he netted comfortably, making the score 2-1.

Chelsea tried attacking, but with a man down there was always a fear of counter attack. Chelsea did not capitalize on the opportunities that came their way and were punished again in 90+2 minutes when Paul Scharner scored, giving Wigan their first win ever against one of the top 4 English clubs.

Manchester United defeated Stoke City 0-2. First half saw United making sloppy passes but soon Ferguson replaced Nani with Giggs which proved to be a master stroke as Giggs helped United to score both the goals. With assists from Giggs in both united goals, Berbatov and O’Shea scored a goal each in the 62nd and 77th minute.

Liverpool defeated Hull at Anfield with a thumping 6-1 lead. Torres took 3, Babel 2 and a goal from Gerrard saw Anfield live with action. 4 goals from Keane saw Spurs defeating Burnley 5-0 at home. Big Four through

September 24th, 2009

The renowned big four of the Barclays Premier League are through to the last 16 of the League Cup. Liverpool and Arsenal were already through the previous night, while Manchester United and Chelsea joined them the following tonight.

United were playing newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford in front of 51,000 supporters. Sir Alex Ferguson started the match with a 4-3-3 formation. Macheda, Welback and Owen had been allotted strikers positions. Carrick, Nani and Gibson covered the midfield, and the defense was formed by Neville, Brown, Evans and Fabio and Kuszczak adorned the goalies position.

The win didn’t come easy for United as they were left with 10 men in the 30th minute when Fabio was shown a straight red card for a foul on Kightly. Kightly was running straight towards the United goal post when Fabio came from behind and slipped in front of Kightly. Fabio was then seen bringing Kightly down with his hands and was red carded by referee Peter Walton. Ferguson soon replaced his young striker Macheda with young defender Ritchie De Laet to make the defense strong.

United kept attacking and finally the breakthrough came in the 66th minute with a superb one-two between Welbeck and Owen which saw Welbeck scoring his first goal in his first match this season for the club. The match ended at 1-0 for the home team.

In London, Kalou scored the only goal of the match in the 52nd minute which was enough to see Chelsea through to the next round. Neighbors, Tottenham Hotspurs defeated Preston North End 5-1, and Everton won 4-0 against Hull City. Malouda might consider leaving Chelsea

March 1st, 2009

Florent Malouda admitted he might be forced to leave Chelsea, if he is not given a better chance to perform by the club.

French winger has been struggling to hold a regular spot in the Blues at Stamford Bridge after making a move from Lyon for £13.5million in July 2007.

According to Luiz Felipe Scolari, Malouda wasn’t playing at his peak, during the manager’s stint at the club.

The winger has only featured in one game, since Guus Hiddink has been appointed the new boss of the club. This has made the situation more aggravated for the French International. He is not thinking of looking for other options, if he will not be able to secure regular action in the remaining part of the season.

Following the clubs 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at Stamford Bridge, Malouda said, ‘I want to play more games and have 3 more months for trying and getting a regular space in the squad.’

‘However, if this will not happen, I am going to analyze the ongoing scenario and look for other options.’

Meanwhile, Liverpool suffered a humiliating 2-0 loss at the hands of Middlesbrough in the Premier League encounter at the Riverside Stadium.

With goals from Turkish international Tuncay Sanli and an own goal from Xabi Alonso, Middlesbrough has made sure that the Reds have fallen far behind in their bid to win the title.

At Goodison Park, Everton managed a 2-0 victory over West Brom with a touch of class from Louis Saha that resulted in the wonderful second goal for the home side.

Benitez has threatened to quit Anfield

February 23rd, 2009

Rafael Benitez, Liverpool manager, threatened to walk out of Anfield after he rejected a new contract that was offered to him.

Sources revealed that the Spaniard rejected a 4-year contract offered to him last week, an event, which left Tom Hicks, club co-owner, stunned.

Benitez insists that he does not have any intentions of committing to the Reds, unless radical changes have been made in the club.

Benitez has been sending angry emails to Liverpool owners accusing them for their lack of support.

Apart from being shocked at the turn of events, co-owner Hicks was fuming for his refusal in signing a contract, which was reportedly worth 16-million pounds.

Things went from bad to worse for Liverpool, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

Dirk Kuyt, who scored his 9th goal of the season, saved the day for Liverpool, after City took the lead through an own goal from Craig Bellamy.

Liverpool’s dream of attaining their 19th title appears all but over with this draw. If the Red Devils falter in the coming games, which they are unlikely to, then only they can get back in frame.

Meanwhile, a 10-man Newcastle held Everton to a goalless draw and moved to a considerable distance from the relegation zone.

After midfielder Kevin Nolan got sent off for a dreadful challenge on Victor Anichebe in the 43rd minute, Magpies showed immense courage to fend off the challenges thrown at them.

Elsewhere at Cravens Cottage, Fulham continued their excellent home form and got on top of West Brom 2-0 thanks to goals from Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson.

Gerrard likely to make a comeback against Manchester City

February 17th, 2009

Steven Gerrard is almost certain to make his return against Manchester City during this weekend.

Liverpool captain was on the sidelines following a hamstring injury, which he suffered on February 4 against Everton.

Initially, the England International was expected to sit out for three weeks or even more than that. However, Rafael Benitez, Liverpool Boss, believes that Gerrard, the inspirational figure in the Reds lineup, may make a comeback against Mark Hughes’ men from the bench.

During an interview, Benitez reportedly said, ‘There is a possibility of seeing him on the bench against City on Sunday. However, we still do not have any confirmation on it.’

Gerrard was most likely to return during an important Champions League clash against Real Madrid. However, Benitez said, ‘He has been consistently improving. The condition he is in, every day spent is important.’

‘The good thing is that he has been working hard with our medical staff and progressing quite well.’

‘Normally, I rate him amongst the players, who can recover quickly. He requires lesser time than other players.’

‘I was surprised to know when a Spanish Daily released that there is a possibility of him playing for some minutes during the weekend before starting against Real Madrid. However, I do not have any idea about the exact scenario.’

‘Gerrard wants to be a part of each game that we play. He feels that the game against Manchester City is going to be very important for our future in the Champions League and shares the same feeling for the Real Madrid encounter.’

Ferdinand: We can win the Premier League

January 30th, 2009

Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, is confident that his team can win the Premier League crown for the third year in succession, if they maintain their present form.

After a run of six consecutive wins, United are now two points clear of their nearest rivals, Chelsea and Liverpool, with a game in hand.

Earlier this month, Red Devils hammered the Blues 3-0 at Old Trafford. They showed similar form against West Brom on Tuesday, where they scored five goals.

Ferdinand said, ‘We have secured the top position in the Premier League table. Now, we need to consolidate on that by keeping the momentum and getting more points from the next few games.’

United will come up against Everton in their next game. They will be looking forward to increase the difference at the top for their title hat trick.

Ferdinand added, ‘If we continue to perform in the way we have been doing in the last few games, we will win the title this year.’

The return of Ferdinand and Patrice Evra to the side will be a major boost for Manchester United in the coming games, as they will need their support to extend their winning run. Ferdinand feels the presence of senior players is also important for them to have an impact.

‘Presence of experienced players like Neville, Giggs and Scholes makes it easier for us, as they have helped the side in winning the Premier League before.’

Ferdinand feels that Red Devils are really going to be hard to beat in the coming matches and the possibility of them winning the League will grow more.
