Tottenham Hotspurs Vs Blackburn Rovers: Pavlyuchenko strikes Spurs away from relegation zone

November 24th, 2008

Harry Redknapp’s magic continued to reign supreme at White Hart Lane, as the rejuvenated Spurs defeated a 10-man Rovers 1-0.

Russian star forward, Roman Pavlyuchenko, again played a pivotal role in the victory of his side.

Pavlyuchenko, one of the stars of EURO 2008, struck the winner to get his side away from the relegation zone in only the 9th minute of the game and didn’t allow their opponents to come out of the same predicament.

Rovers’ fullback, Martin Olson, turned his side’s afternoon worse when he got himself sent off within 40 minutes of the game after receiving 2 bookings, within 12 minutes of one another, for fouls on Aaron Lennon.

Paul Ince has his job cut out, as Rovers have not registered a win since 8 games.

At the same time, Redknapp would be looking to make his side carry the momentum, which they have now into the coming games of the season.

If the form of Darren Bent, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Aaron Lennon continued to stay in the same way, they might even reach a commendable position before the first half of the League gets over.

Meanwhile, Roy Keane’s Sunderland registered another loss, which was their third on a row at home, in the Stadium of Light against West Ham United 1-0.

Switzerland International, Valon Behrami, scored for the Hammers in the 20th minute of the game.

This victory was the first for West Ham Boss Gianfranco Zola in the Premier League and its satisfaction was visible on his face after the game.

Redknapp: Bruce might have saved the day for Ferguson

November 14th, 2008

Harry Redknapp, Spurs Boss, believes that former Manchester United player, Steve Bruce, might have been responsible for saving Sir Alex Ferguson from an early exit in 1989.

Former Portsmouth manager was in-charge at Bournemouth, who almost defeated Manchester United in a close encounter at Dean Court.

According to him, if Bruce wouldn’t have intervened, 19 years (of half century in football) for Ferguson at Old Trafford might have been a different story altogether.

Redknapp said, ‘After moving to Manchester United for his first stint as a manager, he came perilously close of leaving the job. Red Devils were having a torrid spell in those days.’

‘I still remember Bournemouth playing against his side in an FA Cup encounter at Dean Court, which ended in a 1-1 draw.’

‘In the final minutes of the game, Luther Blissett found an empty net to put a cross into. However, defender Steve Bruce came from nowhere and jumped on Luther’s ankles, which led to a penalty but stopped him from scoring.’

‘While taking the penalty, Luther failed to score and scooped it wide. If Luther would have converted it and won the game for us, who knows what could have followed.’

‘However, we didn’t and Devils won the replay contest at Old Trafford. Today, that draw, for me, has started the script of one of the finest ever in the English League. With his incredible record, I currently rate him with the likes of Bill Nicholson & Bill Shankly.’

Meanwhile, Newcastle United’s manager, Joe Kinnear, warned Redknapp to not use foul tactics for getting keeper Shay Given in Spurs ranks.

Kinnear said, ‘Shay Given is an important member of the team and we are not looking forward to part with him. Redknapp can save his time and money, as Given is not leaving his club.’

Manchester City Vs Tottenham Hotspurs: Redknapp’s magic continues to work for Spurs

November 10th, 2008

Presence of Harry Redknapp worked again for the 10-man Spurs, as they defeated a 9-man Manchester City 2-1 in City of Manchester Stadium and continued their 5 match undefeated streak in the league.

Although City made a breakthrough in only the 16th minute of the game through a Robinho goal (his eighth in the season), Spurs was able to end it on a high with two goals from an inspired Darren Bent.

The game also had 3 red cards shown by the referee including a straight red card in the 83rd minute to City Captain Dunne for hauling back Bent, who was homing in on City goal for his third.

Apart from Dunne, City’s Gelson Fernandes (27th minute) and Spurs Assou-Ekotto (injury time) were shown the door by the referee during the game.

Although one club with a new manager came on top of their opponents, the other one was unable to repeat their show in the recent games.

Joe Kinnear’s Newcastle United made it difficult for Fulham at Craven’s Cottage. However, they were unable to win, as Fulham continued their great homerun by defeating Magpies 2-1, which included a spot kick from Danny Murphy.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa failed to move close to a possible Champions League spot for the next season, as they lost to Middlesbrough 1-2 at Villa Park, with both the Boro goals coming from Turkish star Tuncay Sanli.

Another game saw Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men score a confident 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park with the in-form Nicolas Anelka scoring both the goals for the Blues.

Jenas: We’re lucky to be playing under Harry

November 5th, 2008

Spurs striker, Jermaine Jenas, firmly believes that his side still has a lot of work to do for avoiding relegation in this season.

After a terrible start to their Premier League campaign, Spurs have been boosted by Harry Redknapp’s arrival. Former Portsmouth Boss arrived to the White Hart Lane after Juande Ramos was shown the door for the continuous underperformance of his side.

After taking over the job at the North London club, Redknapp has continuously steered his new club to win over Bolton and Liverpool. His inspiration also worked in gaining a valuable point from a 4-4 away draw against Arsenal.

Unsurprisingly, Jenas seems resolute that with the charge in the hands of Redknapp, Tottenham are sure to march ahead in the League table.

While speaking to a newspaper, Jenas said ‘I feel there’s still a long way to go for coming out of the situation that we find ourselves currently in the table.’

‘However, everyone can see that our players are fully prepared for working as hard as they can for getting us up the table and move out of this predicament.’

‘It’s an unfortunate scenario for us, which none at the club wanted to be in.’

‘Attitude in such situations plays an important role in getting you out. You need lifting yourself for each game.’

‘Initially, we were unable to find something that could give help us out in such a situation. However with the arrival of Harry to our club and our continuous run of success, we know that there is still hope for us to do well.’

‘You’d have heard a lot of Harry and his skills when it comes to managing a side. Now, we are amongst the few lucky ones, who are experiencing that today.’

Tottenham Hotspurs Vs Liverpool: Redknapp’s men hand first defeat to Reds

November 2nd, 2008

A rejuvenated Spurs side, under their new boss Harry Redknapp, handed Liverpool their first defeat of the current Premier League season at White Hart Lane.

This 2-1 victory, which resulted in the Reds losing the top position to Chelsea, saw an own goal from defender Jimmy Carraghar (70th minute) and a goal from Russian International Pavlyuchenko in the injury time.

Although in-form Dirk Kuyt scored the opener for Liverpool in only the 3rd minute of the game, home team, who had a wonderful last eight days in the Premier League, came back wonderfully. They had an attacking intent during the second half: Something which was missing in the earlier games.

This win came as a sweet revenge for Spurs, who had their problems with the Reds in the transfer period during the high profile transfer of their star striker Robbie Keane.

Meanwhile, Chelsea came regained the top position with another comprehensive win in the season.

They hammered Roy Keane’s Sunderland 5-0, which included a hat-trick from Nicolas Anelka, at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United also moved up the table to 3rd position, after they emerged winners over the Tigers (Hull City), who now has lost 2 in as many games.

With two goals (both in first half) coming from Portuguese winger, Cristiano Ronaldo, Red Devils managed to win 4-3 in a tight encounter against Hull at Old Trafford.

Inconsistent Gunners had yet another poor showing, as they came out second best at Britannia Stadium. Stoke scored an impressive 2-1 victory over Arsenal in a game that lacked dedication from Arsene Wenger’s side.

Portsmouth also suffered a loss at Fratton Park, as they lost to Wigan Athletic 2-1 with an injury time goal coming from England International Emile Heskey.

Again, Louis Saha’s first goal for Everton helped David Moyes’ side to score a 1-0 victory over Fulham at Goodison Park.

Other games during the day, West Brom Vs Blackburn at The Hawthorns (2-2) & Middlesbrough Vs West Ham in Riverside Stadium (1-1), saw both the sides sharing points.

Redknapp: We are raring to go one up against the Reds!

November 1st, 2008

Harry Redknapp, new Spurs Boss, has been urging his team to go ahead at full stretch against Liverpool during their Saturday clash.

Spurs will be hosting one of the games of the season at White Hare Lane and look confident for taking over Liverpool, who is at the top of the chart. This game is all the more important for the transfer fiasco that both the sides went through in the beginning of the season.

Spurs have a rekindled spirit after they conquered Bolton and succeeded in pulling out a draw against Arsenal at 4-4, this Wednesday.

Former Portsmouth Manager, Redknapp, looked real anxious about the outcome of the match against Liverpool and said that, it would be a fantastic week, if they won.

Having built the entire team around Luka Modric, Croatian Midfielder, Redknapp is pretty confident about his team’s caliber and would be pressing his team to play an aggressive game, especially as they are playing on their home turf.

He is also looking forward to the return of Ledley King, whom he places in the ranks of Ferdinand (Rio) and Terry (John) when it comes to being terrific at the back lines.

The manager also urged the Spurs fans to provide a grand welcome to the newly transferred Robbie Keane, who is now a part of the Reds’ outfit, for having given a great support to their team.

However, he was all praise for the Croatian midfielder, who has performed greatly so far and is looking forward to build on his game play.

After a pretty strong comeback from the position they were in, Tottenham will be looking forward to continue their run against Liverpool.

Arsenal Vs Tottenham Hotspurs: Redknapp magic works again

October 30th, 2008

Magic touch of Harry Redknapp worked in two consecutive games, as his side was able to deny Arsenal full points from the game at Emirates Stadium.

Although Spurs broke the deadlock first through David Bentley (13th minute), goals from Silvestre (37th minute), Gallas (45th minute) and Adebayor (64th minute) broke the back of the touring side.

However, Spurs scored 3 of the next four goals, including a stunning equalizer in extra time through Lennon, and were able to draw the game.

Meanwhile, Chelsea broke the dream run of Hull City at the Kingston Communications Stadium, as they romped home with a 3-0 won through goals from Frank Lampard (3rd minute), Nicolas Anelka (50th minute) and Malouda (75th minute).

Liverpool and Manchester United also won their respective matches quite comfortably.

Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo answered Sir Alex Ferguson’s challenge, as he scored two goals for allowing Red Devils to achieve a 2-0 victory over West Ham United at Old Trafford.

League leaders, Liverpool, saw Steven Gerrard scored from the penalty as a resilient Portsmouth side under their new boss, Tony Adams, was unable to create many chances during the 1-0 victory for the home side at Anfield.

Elsewhere, Fulham defeated Wigan Athletic 2-0 at Cravens Cottage. Again, Villa Park had a thriller on show, as the home side barely managed a 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Everton and Stoke also won their matches, as they defeated Bolton Wanderers (1-0 at Reebok Stadium) and Sunderland (1-0 at Britannia Stadium).

Biggest upset of the day was when Middlesbrough defeated Manchester City 2-0 at Riverside Stadium through goals from Afonso Alves (53rd minutes) and Garry O’Neil (Injury time).

Tony Adams named the new Portsmouth Boss

October 28th, 2008

Tony Adams, former defender from England, was today named the new Portsmouth Boss, after Harry Redknapp left for a stint with struggling Tottenham Hotspurs.

Adams along with Joe Jordan took the temporary charge of the club during a 1-1 draw against Fulham on Sunday following Redknapp’s departure.

The 42-year-old has now been given Fratton Park’s top job and his first test will be against current Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Peter Storrie, who is currently the executive chairman in Fratton Park, gave the confirmation of his appointment. He revealed that Adams has been given a 2-year contract.

Storrie said ‘It has been a tough 48 hours for the club.’

‘We did say that we might take time for the decision on this important job. However, after having a chat with Tony, we felt that he’s perfect for the job. Even, his dedication for the club in the recent past has simplified our decision of selecting him.’

On being asked of his appointment as the new boss of Portsmouth, Adams said, ‘It’s a fantastic feeling. I’m honored!’

‘I’m excited for the task in hand. I cannot wait to start. It’s been more than 2 years for me at Fratton Park and this stint will help me in contributing more to the success of the club.’

‘We’ve got great talent at Portsmouth. I hope to nurture them in the same manner as Harry did when I was working under him.’

‘Harry did a great job for the clubs and its fans. He will be a touch act to follow. But, I’m sure I won’t let anyone down.’

Chelsea Vs Liverpool: Alonso helps Liverpool to break Chelsea’s home run

October 27th, 2008

A solitary goal from Xabi Alonso in the first half allowed Liverpool to break the 86-game unbeaten run of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and at the same time, it allowed the Reds to move to the top of the table.

It took only nine minute for Liverpool to take a 1-0 lead, as Alonso’s shot got deflected off Jose Bosingwa and left Czech keeper Petr Cech wrong-footed.

Blues began on a stronger note and almost scored a goal against Rafael Benitez’s men. However after the away side scored the goal, which eventually proved to be a winner, it was Reds all the way!

Tight defense proved to be too much for Scolari’s side, as they were unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle.

This 1-0 defeat has resulted in Chelsea losing the top spot to Liverpool, who now have 23 points from 9 games and are yet to lose a game this season.

Elsewhere, it took only 24 hours for Harry Redknapp to change the fortune of Spurs, as his side defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at White Hart Lane.

Ramon Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent scored the goals for Tottenham, who got their first win of this season after nine games.

Like Hull City, dream run of Aston Villa also continued, as they thrashed Wigan Athletic 4-0 at JJB Stadium. England hopeful, Agbonlahor, scored a goal and had two assists in Villa’s win, as Fabio Capello looked on.

Manchester City and Arsenal also won their respective games. Robinho’s hattrick allowed City to score a 3-0 won over Stoke at City of Manchester Stadium, whereas Upton Park saw Arsenal struggle hard for their 2-0 over West Ham.

However, it was disappointment for Portsmouth, who was waving goodbye to Spurs new manager, Harry Redknapp. They were unable to score a victory over Fulham at Fratton Park. The game ended 1-1 with a late equalizer from Fulham’s Clint Dempsey.

Curbishley aftermath: Redknapp denies chance of West Ham return

September 5th, 2008

Things at most of the clubs in the Premiership, since the transfer season ended, seem to be headed towards an irrational, blame-game centered approach with managers being at the receiving ends in more cases than one.

The recent resignation of West Ham manager Alan Curbishley has aroused comments from one and all, including many high profile managers and members of the managers’ forum in the Premiership.

According to former West Ham player and Manager, Harry Redknapp, who is currently the manager of Portsmouth, this is a perfect case of a manager being let down by the club’s owners in crucial decisions regarding transfers.

Redknapp has further added that this is the emerging trend in English football with owners turning deaf to their managers and not caring how the manager will manage with a squad just ‘provided‘ to him.

Curbishley resigned yesterday following rumors that he was dissatisfied with the transfer policies of the club.

Curbushley’s resignation now leaves the manager’s post open at West Ham, and when asked about his prospects of accepting the job, Redknapp plainly denied any interest saying that though he was attached to his current club. He said that he was quite happy at Pompey and had no intentions of leaving.

In addition to Curbushley, Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has also left his club after being disappointed with club owners on transfer grounds.

With no manager, Hammers will require getting out of the same hole that clouded Chelsea in the previous season with Mourinho’s departure.
