Stoke City Vs Tottenham Hotspurs: Ramos’ woes continue as Spurs lose another

October 20th, 2008

Stoke thrashed Tottenham 2-1 increasing Juande Ramos’ woes, while Hull maintained their winning run as they defeated West Ham 1-0 at Kingston Communication Stadium.

The loss continued the worst starts ever for Spurs in Barclays Premier League.

Gareth Bale went on to concede a penalty, which was converted by Danny Higginbotham, within 17 minutes of the game and was eventually red carded at Britannia Stadium.

Although Darren Bent was able to hit an equaliser, it was Stoke’s Rory Delap, who scored the winning goal for the home side.

Dismissal of substitute Michael Dawson in injury time, after he challenged Sidibe only added to the problems of the North Londoners.

Spurs are yet to win a game this season and currently stand at the bottom of the table with two points from eight matches.

Meanwhile, Hull continued their remarkable start to this season with Michael Turner scoring from a header in the 51st minute, which was enough to defeat the Hammers 1-0 at the KC stadium.

Turner’s only goal in the match helped Hull to roar back again to the third place, which they secured after scoring stunning wins over Tottenham and Arsenal.

Home side deserved this win and the Lewisham born striker gave full support to the attacking intent of his team.

West Ham will surely regret the two misses from Carlton Cole, which denied them the quest for an equaliser.

Now with Hull playing great soccer in the current season, they will make life difficult for ‘Big Four’ of the Barclays Premier League.

Newcastle United Vs Everton: Newcastle breaks losing streak with 2-2 draw

October 6th, 2008

After five successive defeats in the Barclays Premier League, Newcastle United finally managed to salvage a point from the game against Everton at Goodison Park.

Everton took a 2-0 lead in the first half and almost looked like running away with the game. However, Newcastle had a roaring comeback making it 2-2 at the end, as they scored in both the half of the game.

First goal for Everton came in the form of a penalty after Nicky Butt got penalized for a sliding tackle on Baines. Mike Arteta’s had no difficulty while converting the spot-kick in the 17th minute of the game.

Marouane Fellaini scored the second goal for Toffees in the 35th minute of the game, as he crashed home a Baines’ cross.

Although Owen and Duff made constant effort at Everton’s goal, Tim Howard made valiant saves to deny Newcastle from opening their account.

However in the extra time of the first half, Steven Taylor headed home a ball to make it 2-1 for the Magpies.

Taylor was again instrumental in the second goal for the away side, as his pass caught Damien Duff in his way. Duff guided the ball into the net for making it 2-2 in the 47th minute, which was the final score in the end.

This draw was relief not only for Newcastle, but also for David Moyes’ Everton, who finally ended their losing streak at home.

Meanwhile, it was another miserable day for the Spurs, as they kept their bottom position intact after losing 1-0 to an in-form Hull City. Hull, who got promoted in this season, has now moved to the 3rd position on the Premier League table.

Arsene Wenger tired of underperforming Gunners

September 30th, 2008

Following the unbelievable 1-2 loss to Hull City this Saturday at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has stated that he is tired of the performance given by his players.

This defeat meant that the Gunners slipped to the fourth spot with 12 points following a weak at the top of the table. Arsenal has already lost twice in their first six games of the Premiership with their first defeat coming against Fulham.

English Premier League newcomers Hull City defeated Arsenal, contenders for this year’s Premiership, after trailing by a Paul McShane’s own goal.

Wenger went ahead to say ‘What the Gunners delivered on Saturday was not enough to impress, and that is known to all players and fans!

He remarked that there will be changes in the squad for the Arsenal squad for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Porto.

Arsenal’s last match against Porto was a 1-1 draw, a lucky one, because the point saving goal for Gunners came in the dying moments of the match.

‘For the club having all the ingredients to be at the top of the Premiership, a tame submission to a newly promoted team is nothing less than shame.’

The Frenchman, while talking of Hull said that the Tigers were technically the weaker team, but showed the heart and commitment to play in front of a much better team in their den where they were undefeated for more than 15 months.

Captain William Gallas has warned the players about a downfall, if the recent trend continues of loosing in dull encounters primarily due to overconfidence amongst players of taming their opponents.

According to Gallas, ‘Club needs to avoid giving chances like those that went to Geovinni and Cousin on Saturday, and has to be more attacking, rather than possessive’.

Manchester United Vs Chelsea: United fails to capitalize on good start

September 22nd, 2008

It was probably one of the games of the seasons at Stamford Bridge, as holders Manchester United took on Chelsea, who had an 85-games unbeaten record at their home ground.

Despite poor form in recent games, Red Devils started on a positive note and got the home side on the back foot for the first time in a long while.

Although Ronaldo and Tevez were not a part of the playing eleven, still the likes of Hargreaves, Park and Fletcher made life difficult for Chelsea defenders.

Blues, on the other hand, had a bad start to the game with Deco injured during practice session before the game and defender Ricardo Carvalho hobbled off only after 12 minutes.

Rooney, Fletcher and Ferdinand had attempts at the goal, but Petr Cech was tough to beat. Even though United players were able to penetrate the defenders, but Cech (with wobbles) was able to stop them from scoring.

However in the eighteenth minute, Cech wobbled a shot from Berbatov after a pinpoint pass from Evra and Park was there to make it 1-0 for the away side.

Like the Liverpool game, Devils lacked finishing in this game or it could have been an easy win for them. In the end, things could have been worse, if Chelsea would have been alive to the situation.

After constant attack on United’s goal through Anelka, Cole, Ballack and Lampard, substitute Kalou scored the equalizer heading a Mikel’s free kick in 80th minute.

Manchester United, who had 7 bookings during the game, ended the drawn game (1-1) with Ferdinand showing bad temper to referee Mike Riley for his improper handling of situations during the match.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa continued their good run in the league by beating West Brom 2-1 at The Hawthorns. Another game saw Hull salvaging a point in a 2-2 draw against an inconsistent Everton at Kingston Communications Stadium.

Newcastle midfielder Guthrie to apologize to Hull striker Fagan

September 17th, 2008

Newcastle midfielder Danny Guthrie, who just received his first red card with Newcastle in Saturday’s 1-2 loss to Hull City, has revealed that he wants to ‘personally’ apologize to the Tigers’ striker Craig Fagan as soon as possible.

This was Newcastle’s first match since manager Kevin Keegan had left the club.

It was revealed by Hull manager Phil Brown that the striker has got a broken right leg. The tigers revealed on Monday night that Fagan has suffered a fractured right tibia in the bone breaking challenge that earned the red card to Guthrie.

It is still not sure whether Guthrie’s apology will be able to satisfy Hull, as following an X-ray report, Fagan is expected to stay out on the sidelines for at least three months.

Guthrie, after the incident, answered that though the tackle was wrong, it was in part due to the frustration of losing the match. The player stated that it was quite different from his real self.

He also added that Newcastle are in constant touch with Hull to keep themselves updated on the issue, and assured that he wanted to talk to Fagan at the earliest possible.

Meanwhile, another Magpie midfielder, Argentinean Jonas Gutirrez has been injured after a shoulder push in a South America World Cup qualifier against Peru.

The Argentinean Football Association has confirmed that as a result of talks with Newcastle, the midfielder is to stay in Argentina for his rest and rehabilitation.

There’s also news that Mike Ashley has asked for a staggering US$ 860 millions from an investor group of Dubai for selling Newcastle United.

‘Bad Boy’ Barton receives 6-match ban

September 6th, 2008

Newcastle received another jolt before their next game, as their ‘Bad Boy’ Joey Barton received a 6-match ban and a fine of US $50,000 fine.

This week saw Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer, who were two of the biggest contributors for the club, leave their post after differences with the owners during transfer season. Now, this news with Barton is surely going to effect their preparations ahead of the next week’s game against Hull City at St. James Park.

This fine on Barton was due to his altercations with Ousmane Dabo in the previous season.

Ban on Barton is for 12 games. However, 6 of those games have been deferred till the later half of 2009-2010 Premier League Season.

26-year old Barton was given punishment by independent disciplinary panel on Friday for his attacks, when both players were a part of the Manchester City side.

4-men panel that included Graham Taylor, Former England Manager, took only two hours for reaching their verdict. With his current ban, Barton is ruled out of all League matches till October 25.

Newcastle United, which already was hit with small number of players in the squad for injury woes and poor transfer season deals, will have to regroup and fight these testing times.

Although the Magpies had a solid start to the season with a draw against Manchester United and win against Bolton, 3-0 loss to the Gunners and immediately followed by departure of Manager Keegan is sure to be a very big hurdle to overcome for the Magpies.

Portsmouth Vs Everton: Pompey breaks losing streak with a 3-0 win

August 31st, 2008

Portsmouth finally got back into winning habits with brilliant assists and clever braces from Jermain Defoe, who helped them to seal a 3-0 victory over Everton.

Everton continued their 6 games loosing streak on home turf, Goodison Park, which stretched from the end of previous season. They never looked in any momentum and a struggling Portsmouth side made full use of this situation.

Jermain Defoe scored the first goal for Harry Redknapp’s men, when he found the net in the 12th minute with a stunning predatory effort.

As the first half progressed, Everton slowly showed signs of getting back into form with Yakubu, former Portsmouth forward, showing clever plays and almost reaping rich dividends.

However with Portsmouth scoring their second goal just five minutes from the break, Everton received a major setback. It was Defoe again, who provided an excellent pass to help Glen Johnson score the goal.

Everton might have got back into the game with a goal after the break. However, Yakubu failed to convert a penalty kick in the 47th minute, much to the disappointment of the home fans.

Defoe sealed the deal for Pompey, as he scored his second and the team’s third goal in the 68th minute. He went past Howard with a classy lofted shot that bounced back after hitting the crossbar over the line.

Redknapp was satisfied with his side’s performance and hoped to see the same class in the coming matches.
Meanwhile at KC stadium, Wigan Athletic proved too much for Hull City, as the home side’s fairytale run came to a disastrous end with a 5-0 defeat. Egypt International Amr Zaki scored two goals for Wigan.

Liverpool Vs Sunderland: Reds scrap a 1-0 win against Black Cats

August 17th, 2008

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has finally got a reason to smile following the miserable UEFA qualifier draw to Standard Liege on Wednesday. Liverpool registered an away defeat in their very first game of the season against a Roy Keane led Sunderland in the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool started with their new 20 million signing Robbie Keane among others like Jamie Carragher, Steve Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt. However, the former Tottenham man was rarely a help in the attack.

The Reds were shocked by the way Sunderland played the first half, when the home fans were witnessing an attacking game of football from their side.

Sunderland had four debuts in El-Hadji Diouf, Teemu Tainio, Pascal Chimbonda and Steed Malbranque, all four of whom tried to make a quick impression in the match.

In the 13th minute, Diouf made a stunning cross to Daryl Murphy, who headed the ball straight to the Reds’ goalie Reina.

Among others, Malbranque was also quite eager to contribute in the game.

After a goalless first half, Xabi Alonso was brought in at the start of the second one, and he almost scored from the opposite half of the ground when his strike was just off-target.

The game finally got into the Reds’ hands when Keane was substituted by El Zhar in the 77th minute.

After an attacking game of football the Spanish forward, Fernando Torres scored after 5 minutes of Keane’s substitution, much to the amusement of the away team’s supporters, which was the only goal in the match and helped the Anfield side to register a win.

Meanwhile, Hull City won their first ever Premiership match against a Fulham side with an impressive 2-1 score. However, newcomers Stoke city failed to impress, as they lost 1-3 to Bolton Wanderers.

Ferguson: Campbell’s future is at Old Trafford

August 10th, 2008

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that due to a lack of strikers in his squad, he is going to give 20 year striker old Fraizer Campbell a chance into their first team, adding that the front man has a future at Old Trafford.

Just yesterday, the striker scored the winning goal against Espanyol in the Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s testimonial match, a match in which the former player and now reserves team coach played for about 20 minutes.

The young striker has been on fire on his loan spells with Royal Antewerp and Hull City with whom he played a great role in gaining promotion to the Premier League, assisting in the goal in the 1-0 win over Bristol City in the Championship playoffs.

Hull are said to be interested in signing him on a further loan or on a long term contract, but Ferguson has said that United will have Campbell as a part of their squad for the 2008-09 season.

As far as the current squad is seen, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick are infected by flu and won’t be available for the match against Juventus on Wednaday. The manager, however, insists that both are expected to be fit for the Community Shield next Sunday.

Captain Gary Neville, who was reduced to the bench in the testimonial match due to a calf strain, will be, according to Ferguson, in good shape for the match against Juve.

As a back up to the strikers, Manchester United have tried getting Angola international Manucho, who is already a part of the squad and hopefully will be filing papers soon.
