Wigan Athletic Vs Everton: Camara stars in 1-0 win for Lactics

November 25th, 2008

Henri Camara gave Wigan Athletic something to cheer about, as he scored his first goal in two years and took his side out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Everton at the JJB Stadium.

Senegal International came as a substitute for Olivier Kapo and took just 6 minutes to rifle a low shot past Everton Keeper Tim Howard following a wonderful piece of skill from midfielder Antonio Valencia.

This goal was enough to give only the second home win for Steve Bruce’s side after they registered a 2-1 win over Manchester City almost couple of months ago.

Moreover, this win was a perfect fillip to Bruce following their recent results were raising fears of Wigan getting dragged into dogfight of the relegation zone.

Still, we are far from seeing the Latics out of trouble. However, this thoroughly deserving victory, where Lee Cattermole was exceptional, showed delight on the face of Wigan Boss. At the final whistle, the pleasure of scoring the goal was clearly visible Camara’s face.

31-year old forward was on loan West Ham United and failed to score a single goal on what was a horrible campaign.

Camara made a return to the JJB Stadium earlier this summer and after scoring thrice in the Carling Cup, finally hit the net in a top flight game for the first time since scoring for Wigan against Middlesbrough in December 2006.

Meanwhile, Everton made a short trip to JJB Stadium with an unbeaten streak in 5 games. However, following a bright start, faded badly.

This defeat for Everton meant that none of the top side’s in the league was able to register a victory in this week.

Ferguson receives a 2-match ban

November 18th, 2008

Manchester United Boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, received a 2-match ban and a fine of US$15,000 from FA. He was charged following his on-field row with referee Mike Dean.

66-year-old manager was furious when Dean didn’t send off Andy Turner, Hull defender, for his challenge on Michael Carrick during Red Devils’ 4-3 win over the newly promoted side at Old Trafford.

Following that incident, Dean also awarded a penalty to Hull for an innocuous challenge from Rio Ferdinand on Bernard Mendy. This only added to the frustration of the Scot.

Earlier, Ferguson served a 2-match ban for finger-jabbing rant at referee Mark Clattenburg, when his side lost to Bolton.

The latest suspension involving him will start from December 2. This means that he’ll not be available pitch side for United’s Carling Cup encounter against Rovers on December 3.

He is also going to miss out on touchline reunion with Roy Keane, who captained United couple of years back. Keane will be bringing Sunderland to Old Trafford on December 6 for a Premier League encounter.

Ferguson claimed that FA was desperate for hitting him with a charge for improper conduct.

Meanwhile, Everton’s David Moyes was another manager to get charged for improper conduct against referee Alan Wiley.

Wiley sent Moyes to the stands, after the Toffees manager criticized him for not giving a penalty during their 3-2 win against Stoke in September.

However, he has not been slapped with a ban similar to Ferguson. Moyes will only require paying $7,500 for his offence. In addition to the fine, he also received a warning for future conducts.

Hull City Vs Manchester City: Geovanni wins the battle of Brazilians

November 17th, 2008

Geovanni was able to edge out the battle of Brazilians and helped Hull to salvage a 2-2 draw against Manchester City, his former club, at the Kingston Communication Stadium.

Robinho, who was drafted into the Eastlands side for 32.5 million pounds, played lively on the field, but failed to score a goal. However, City teammate Stephen Ireland continued his good season by scoring both the goals for the visitors.

In the 14th minute, Hull scored the opener, when forward, Cousin, made full use of a horrendous mistake in the defense from Tam Ben Heim.

However, another defensive gaffe from Kamil Zayatte allowed Stephen Ireland to score the equalizer for City in the 37th minute.

Ireland followed it up a sublime effort and was able to score his second goal in the final minutes of the first half to make it 2-1 for the visitors.

Geovanni then in the 60th minute scored the equalizer and allowed the host to take a much-needed point from the game.

City Boss, Mark Hughes, will now be looking for his players to gather their concentration and get back into winning habit, which was clearly visible in the earlier matches of the season.

Meanwhile, Everton managed a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough at Goodison Park.

Boro scored the opening goal in the game only within 8 minutes into the first half through O’Neil. However, they were unable to hold the lead, as Yakubu scored the equalizer for Toffees in the 65th minute of the game much to the delight of their boss David Moyes.

Everton Vs Manchester United: Rejuvenated Everton denies a Devils’ victory

October 26th, 2008

Everton was able to outmuscle Manchester United, as they held the current Premier League Champions to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

Devils dominated the first half of the game and there was even a stage, when David Moyes’ men were only chasing shadows. However, the home side came back with vigor at their opponents and almost staged a surprising upset.

Earlier, Darren Fletcher broke the deadlock for United to make it 1-0 in the 22nd minute, when he placed a Giggs’ pass wide of Everton keeper Tim Howard.

The score line would have been even worse for Everton, had Ronaldo and Rooney would have converted the chances they got in the first half.

However, Toffees came back with a goal from Marouane Fellaini in the 63rd minute, as he headed a Neville ball past Edwin Van der Sar to make it 1-1.

The game had some heated moments. Former Everton striker Wayne Rooney got a yellow card for a tackle on Arteta and he was immediately taken off by Sir Alex Ferguson, as he feared that things could have turned even worse with his presence on the ground.

Meanwhile at Stadium of Lights, Roy Keane’s Sunderland scored a 2-1 over Newcastle United ending their wait for a home win over the tourists that lasted for 28 years.

Hull continued their dream run in the Premier League, as they convincingly won an away game against West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at The Hawthorns.

After a goalless draw last week against Bolton, Blackburn again failed to score full points against Middlesbrough at Ewood Park. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle United Vs Everton: Newcastle breaks losing streak with 2-2 draw

October 6th, 2008

After five successive defeats in the Barclays Premier League, Newcastle United finally managed to salvage a point from the game against Everton at Goodison Park.

Everton took a 2-0 lead in the first half and almost looked like running away with the game. However, Newcastle had a roaring comeback making it 2-2 at the end, as they scored in both the half of the game.

First goal for Everton came in the form of a penalty after Nicky Butt got penalized for a sliding tackle on Baines. Mike Arteta’s had no difficulty while converting the spot-kick in the 17th minute of the game.

Marouane Fellaini scored the second goal for Toffees in the 35th minute of the game, as he crashed home a Baines’ cross.

Although Owen and Duff made constant effort at Everton’s goal, Tim Howard made valiant saves to deny Newcastle from opening their account.

However in the extra time of the first half, Steven Taylor headed home a ball to make it 2-1 for the Magpies.

Taylor was again instrumental in the second goal for the away side, as his pass caught Damien Duff in his way. Duff guided the ball into the net for making it 2-2 in the 47th minute, which was the final score in the end.

This draw was relief not only for Newcastle, but also for David Moyes’ Everton, who finally ended their losing streak at home.

Meanwhile, it was another miserable day for the Spurs, as they kept their bottom position intact after losing 1-0 to an in-form Hull City. Hull, who got promoted in this season, has now moved to the 3rd position on the Premier League table.

Moyes: Everton requires 90 minutes of strong character at Goodison Park

October 2nd, 2008

Everton Boss, David Moyes, feels that his side is just 90 minutes from getting good times rolling again at Goodison Park.

Toffees are currently having an unpredictable season. They have lost all the three games in front of their home fans.

Last Wednesday in the Carling Cup, Everton was shown the door by Blackburn Rovers and today, there is an equal chance of them seeing an early exit in the UEFA Cup.

Everton will be facing Standard Liege, Belgian Champions, in an away fixture.

Standard Liege has an edge in this game, as they were able to manage a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park. There is a great possibility that the Belgian side might snatch a place in the next round based on away goal difference.

However, Everton boss said in a pre-match interview ‘Any club is only a game away from getting back into the habit of winning and we are no different.’

‘If players like Yakubu, Saha, Cahill and Neville can play at their best, we can easily win games, whoever be the opponent.’

‘We are currently having a bad run at Goodison Park, but it will change. Fans have been great to us in terms of support during these tough times.’

Elsewhere, new Newcastle United’s interim manager, Joe Kinnear, is convinced that Magpies are two wins from getting back in form.

‘Newcastle is too good team to be in a position that it is now. With the class available on show at St. James Park, I am sure couple of wins will do it for them.’

With the next game against Everton at Goodison Park, where the home side is in the middle of a terrible run, Newcastle has a great opportunity to come back to winning ways.

David Moyes acknowledges FA charge

September 30th, 2008

David Moyes, Everton Manager, acknowledged an FA charge of inappropriate conduct during a Premier League match, as confirmed by the officials of Merseyside club.

The charge associated with Moyes reactions were regarding a decision made by Alan Wiley, who refereed their Premier League encounter against Stoke City on September 14.

Scot was angry with the referee’s decision for not awarding a penalty, which according to him was a clear handball in the box by Leon Cort, Stoke’s defender.

The same event occurred during Merseyside derby, when Everton faced Liverpool at Goodison Park. The referee’s decision was again not in favor of Moyes side.

Moyes has been requested for a private hearing by FA officials. However, there is no confirmed date for the hearing till date.

Everton has lodged a request to the FA in regards to their midfielder, Tim Cahill, getting a red card against Liverpool.

On the 80th minute of Saturday’s match, referee Mike Riley, who has been making headlines lately for controversial decisions, sent Cahill out of the ground by showing a direct red card for tackling Xabi Alonso.

Everton’s appeal is mainly based on the issue that the referee showed a direct red card instead of a warning yellow. The hearing may take place at the end of this week and the club will have to submit a written document.

Things went from bad to worse for Toffees, as their midfielder Steven Pienaar was arrested by police for allegedly striking a woman in Liverpool.

The incident took place in Sefton Park. However, 26-year-old South African has been presently released on bail.

Liverpool Vs Everton: Torres strikes twice in a 2-0 win

September 28th, 2008

A full strength Liverpool side today clearly proved that when it comes to winning rival matches, there’s none better than them.

They defeated Everton 2 – 0 at Goodison Park in the Merseyrside Derby that witnessed this year’s Euro Cup hero Fernando Torres come back to goal scoring ways.

Liverpool started with the same side that drew against Stoke City last week. Tony Hibbert, who had a knee ligament operation last season, was back for the Toffees, and so was Mikel Arteta, who had recovered from flu just in time.

Everton almost capitalized in the fourteenth minute when a Mikel Arteta corner failed to get inside after getting headed by Tim Cahill.

Just after the second half, Yakubu was booked, and it was Torres, who continuously appealed to the referee about tough defending in the Everton box.

Torres answered the tough Everton defending by scoring two goals within 3 minutes and breaking his season’s goal drought.

It could have been much worse for the home side, if two more goals from Torres would have been allowed by referee Mike Riley: One was disallowed for a foul and the other due to the ball going out of bounds before the goal was scored.

After a 2-0 win, Benitez was all praise for Torres and said that his efforts in the 10-minute period of the second half won the game for Liverpool.

Meanwhile at Riverside Stadium, West Bromwich Albion won 1-0 against Middlesbrough as Jonas Olsson scored in the 53rd minute. Again, Zola’s West Ham scored a 2-1 victory over a 10-men Fulham at Cravens Cottage.

Moyes: Liverpool will be more attacking in Merseyside derby

September 27th, 2008

Everton boss David Moyes feels that Liverpool will be the one dishing out an attacking mode and not his side during the Merseyside derby on Saturday at Goodison Park.

The Merseyside derby has witnessed 16 red cards till date in Premier League, which is more than other popular encounters.

Despite the fact that Everton has a major contribution (10) in the red cards including dismissals of Phil Neville and Tony Hibbert during a turbulent 2-1 loss to Liverpool last season, Moyes believes that Rafael Benitez’s team are going to be more physical in this game.

Everton manager used recent comments from Sir Alex Ferguson after Red Devils were defeated 2-1 at Anfield.

In a post-match interview, Ferguson claimed that his side was outmuscled by Liverpool. After one goal down, Reds went on to become victorious giving Benitez his maiden win over Manchester United in Barclays Premier League after becoming Liverpool manager.

Fellow Scot, Moyes, backed Ferguson’s comments and accused his Saturday’s opponent of always crying foul over Everton’s aggressive playing style, when it was they, who always looked for getting stuck in.

Moyes said ‘Liverpool and Everton games are hotly contested and this one will not be any different.’

‘It might not have the same temper that was visible in last season’s game, but will not lag behind.’

‘Both sides have a hunger to win. However with an opportunity to reach the top of BPL table, Liverpool will come out more aggressive. Again, our recent poor performance at home might also make them feel that we will be vulnerable to an onslaught.’

Everton Vs Stoke City: Everton scraps through for a 2-1 win

September 15th, 2008

Everton played their second away match of the season against Stoke City, after having won the previous one by defeating West Brom 2-1.

It was a match that could have gone either way, as the newly promoted Stoke City has been showing promise after defeating Aston Villa by 3-2.

The match took place in the Britannia Stadium, home turf for the Potters, where they have got their only victory of the season.

The game seemed to be poised until Yakubu scored the opening goal for Everton at the 41st minute, making the balance drift towards Everton.

However, the second half was a seesaw ride for both the sides, as Anichebe got another goal for the Toffees at the 51st minute to make the score 2-0.

It seemed that the match was already won by the visitors, but little did the crowd imagine a comeback goal by Olofinjana at the 55th minute that changed the tempo.

The hope of the home audience was renewed further when Jagielka scored the equalizer on the 63rd minute posing threat to David Moyes’ boys. From then onwards, the game play was attacking without compromising the defense.

In the due course, players got booked for the challenges made in the next few minutes in the process of counter-attacks.

Finally, Cahill hit the hammer on the head at the 77th minute to make it 3-2 for Everton, which in the end crushed the hopes of the home crowd.

The match ended in a 3-2 win for Everton, who will be having sigh of relief after performing very poorly in their home games.
