Manchester City Vs Sunderland: SWP scores twice in a 3-0 win

September 1st, 2008

A brilliant move to sign Shaun Wright-Phillips paid off for City Boss Mark Hughes, as former Chelsea Winger netted twice in spectacular fashion for sealing the game 3-0 against Sunderland in the Stadium of Lights.

Phillips, who was transferred at around 9 million, struck twice in eight minutes in the second half to set up a much needed victory for the away side.

Stephen Ireland was the first to score for Manchester City, when he fired one past Sunderland keeper in the injury time.

Roy Keane’s new look side, which had the likes of Cisse, Diouf and Malbranque, were lacking the firepower to trouble their opponents. Experts even felt that whole team were playing without any organization and showed no real threat to goal.

Keane showed his frustrations on fourth official Chris Foy, who missed number of fouls including the ones that Leadbitter and Malbranque writhing in pain.

Phillips made it 2-0 when he side-footed a ball from Jo into Sunderland net in the 50th minute.

Within eight minutes, the England international again went past Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon, when a pass from Michael Ball caught Phillips waiting at the right place that made City take an unbeatable 3-0 lead.

Elsewhere at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea was unable to continue their winning streak, as they drew 1-1 against a rejuvenated Spurs side. At Villa Park, a harsh reception from Villa fans welcomed Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez, who was constantly making moves for getting their Captain Gareth Barry in his side. The game, which saw Liverpool Star Fernando Torres limp off the ground much to the horror of Benitez, ended in the second goalless draw of the season.

SWP resigned by Manchester City for 4 years

August 29th, 2008

Shaun Wright Phillips has been resigned by his former club Manchester City for an undisclosed sum (reported as £9 million) from Chelsea.

26-year old Phillips passed a medical test on Thursday and signed 4-year contract with City.

According to sources, Wright Phillips was initially reluctant for making a move from Stamford Bridge. However after having talks with Chelsea manager on this issue, his decision of calling time in The Blues shoes was finalized.

Phillips quoted: ‘I am delighted for making a comeback to Manchester City, where it actually started for me. I just cannot wait anymore to get back on the field for them’.

Mark Hughes, City Manager, expressed his pleasure after finalizing Phillips deal. He was with his side in Denmark to play FC Midtjylland for their second leg UEFA Cup clash.

Hughes accepted that he was always an admirer of the player and wanted him to be in City colors, since being appointed as the manager of the club.

It was Manchester City only, where the player made an impact in Premier League, before getting transferred to the London Club 3 years ago for £21 million.

Wright-Phillips had a 7-year spell with Manchester City (1998 – 2005) before he was moved to the London Club. England winger was able to start in 43 games with Chelsea during his span with the club that lasted 3 years.

Meanwhile, after a 3-0 victory over West Ham United at City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester City will be looking to carry their momentum in the coming games. With Wright in their squad, they might have the ‘right’ side to achieve this feat.

Cook: Ronaldo’s experience might work for Manchester City

August 27th, 2008

Among the various ups and downs of this transfer season, there is a latest development at the Barclay’s Premier League.

Having failed to sign over Ronaldinho from Barcelona, Manchester City officials are now ready to focus on Ronaldo, the Brazilian striker, who is currently playing for AC Milan.

The unfortunate Ronaldo, who had an injury wrought World Cup, has been on the free agent list since last summer when Milan had dropped him from their side.

Garry Cook, the executive chairman of Manchester City, said that they had been looking for an experienced campaigner to their side.

He thinks that Ronaldo, the Brazilian star, now at 31, is the perfect fit to the side and will be a great asset to the club. Ronaldo, on the other hand, is still healing from the knee tendon severed during last February.

Ronaldo is set to return this November, but Manchester City officials are looking into the matter and want to know how serious the problem is.

The club is also insisting that if the Brazilian star were to join them, after release ,then he would have to get rid of the excess fat, which he has put on. Either way, this is going to be more interesting as the player would be paid on his individual match basis and not for the entire season.

Meanwhile, after a comprehensive 3-0 victory over West Ham United, Manchester City will be looking to work on with their goal scoring form and create an impact in Premier League table.

Manchester City Vs West ham United: Elano’s double strike fashions in City win

August 25th, 2008

After a disappointing loss to Aston Villa in the first week of the Premier League, Manchester City fought back with an impressive 3-0 victory over West Ham United in the City of Manchester Stadium.

West Ham never looked threatening for the home side and when midfielder Mark Noble was sent off in 39th minute for getting two yellow cards, they were only waiting for final whistle to go up.

Two goals were scored by Brazilian Elano and one by Petrov, as City had the away side on the mat in the second half with a string of attacks. They gave full pressure on the hammers goalie Robert Green and never allowed him to have a breather in most parts of the second half.

The only worry on the day for City and English supporter was to see the England International Micah Richards sent off the ground, when he collided with his teammate Tal Ben Haim only a minute into the second half of the game.

Richards was treated for 8 minutes on the pitch. However, his condition could not improve and hence, he was taken to dressing room by medics.

Now, everyone will have their fingers crossed for the player’s recovery, as he has an important role in the success of the club.

Meanwhile at JJB stadium, Chelsea continued their winning run with a goal from their new draftee Deco, which took them past Wigan Athletic 1-0. It was a second goal for the Portuguese midfielder in as many games.

City looking for better showing with positive changes

August 22nd, 2008

Manchester City, a club often overshadowed by their illustrious neighbors Manchester United, is looking for improvement in their performance in the premiership following this weekend’s shameful 2-4 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa.

The club has seen more negative things in the recent past than positive. This includes the reports of owner Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister of Thailand, leaving the club following corruption reports. The new manager Mark Hughes has also been rumored constantly of having left the club, even though he’s still there.

Much to Hughes’ frustration, former City ‘hit man’ Roque Santa Cruz, who is currently with Blackburn Rovers, has been labeled as a ‘not-for-sale‘ commodity by Rovers.

According to Hughes, there are still possibilities to put behind all this, as his squad is still improving. Even though they suffered a defeat at Villa Park, they showed intensifying performance at key areas in the field.

The news for the club at the moment is the return of striker Jo, who had been away to Beijing, to represent Brazil.

His return, according to a ‘thankful‘ Hughes, has been important for the club, especially in wake of City trailing 0-1 to FC Midtjylland in the UEFA Cup with the home leg remaining.

Another prolific addition to the squad is Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim from Chelsea, the second transfer of the club in three weeks. He has embarked on a four year contract at City for an undisclosed deal between the two clubs.

Ben Haim will be able to give the club more options in central defense along with Captain Richard Dunne and England star Micah Richards, which is something that lacked last season.
