A brilliant move to sign Shaun Wright-Phillips paid off for City Boss Mark Hughes, as former Chelsea Winger netted twice in spectacular fashion for sealing the game 3-0 against Sunderland in the Stadium of Lights.
Phillips, who was transferred at around 9 million, struck twice in eight minutes in the second half to set up a much needed victory for the away side.
Stephen Ireland was the first to score for Manchester City, when he fired one past Sunderland keeper in the injury time.
Roy Keane’s new look side, which had the likes of Cisse, Diouf and Malbranque, were lacking the firepower to trouble their opponents. Experts even felt that whole team were playing without any organization and showed no real threat to goal.
Keane showed his frustrations on fourth official Chris Foy, who missed number of fouls including the ones that Leadbitter and Malbranque writhing in pain.
Phillips made it 2-0 when he side-footed a ball from Jo into Sunderland net in the 50th minute.
Within eight minutes, the England international again went past Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon, when a pass from Michael Ball caught Phillips waiting at the right place that made City take an unbeatable 3-0 lead.
Elsewhere at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea was unable to continue their winning streak, as they drew 1-1 against a rejuvenated Spurs side. At Villa Park, a harsh reception from Villa fans welcomed Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez, who was constantly making moves for getting their Captain Gareth Barry in his side. The game, which saw Liverpool Star Fernando Torres limp off the ground much to the horror of Benitez, ended in the second goalless draw of the season.
