Lambert no Klose to Signing

May 26th, 2011

Speculation over the past few days have linked Premiership new boys Norwich with German legend Miroslav Klose. However, manager Paul Lambert has quickly moved to pour water on the reports, stating that the Bayern Munich striker is well out of the Canaries’ reach.

The reports seem to have stemmed through Lambert’s past, after the former Colchester man spent time playing for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in the late 1990s and after he also spent some time coaching in Germany. However, Lambert himself states that there is absolutely no truth in the reports, saying that a figure like Klose certainly wouldn’t look to Norwich to end his playing career. Speaking to BBC Scotland, Lambert said: “The lad’s 30-odd now, he’s played in front of 80,000 people. He isn’t going to come to Norwich and put his shoulder to the wheel, that’s me being totally honest.”

While Norwich supporters are likely to be disappointed with this news, they know that none of Lambert’s signings so far have been any so called “big names” and that system has worked perfectly for the past two years. Instead, Lambert is more likely to turn his attention towards the lower leagues and abroad, in the hope of recruiting the seven new faces that he says are needed if Norwich are to launch a serious bid to survive in the top flight.

Meanwhile, on a related subject, Lambert himself has actually signed a new contract at Carrow Road. Following speculation linking him with the vacant position at recently relegated West Ham, Canaries chiefs have acted swiftly and handed the 41-year-old a new deal which strangely they have not disclosed the length of. However, it is sure to keep suitors away for now although if the former Celtic midfielder builds on his recent successors, there may come a time where the club have no choice but to let him go.

Blackpool in the Europa League?

May 23rd, 2011

They may have suffered a cruel and narrow relegation on the last day of the campaign, but there could be at least something to smile about at Bloomfield Road. As reported earlier in the week, Blackpool were one of a number of clubs who were in contention for a Europa League place due to their disciplinary record and following Sunday’s events, there appears a good chance that they could get it.

The Seasiders had their stay in the Premier League cut short on Sunday, after champions Manchester United came from behind to beat the Lancashire side 4-2 at Old Trafford. It was certainly a devastating blow for Ian Holloway’s men, especially after other results meant that they only required a draw to keep their place in the division.

However, there could be hope. England are one of three nations who have been handed an additional Europa League place following their impeccable disciplinary record. This means that the team who top the Fair Play charts in the Premier League will be awarded that place.

However, three of the teams who would normally be competing for this additional place have already qualified for a European competition, as Chelsea top the charts while Tottenham and Manchester United sit nearby.

It was originally thought that Fulham, who occupy 2nd place in the table, would then take the place but all of that could have changed following their game with Arsenal. Zolten Gera was shown a red card in that match and while there are other factors which contribute to the league standings, this is widely thought to be sufficient to send Blackpool above the Craven Cottage outfit.

Should Blackpool make the cut, they will incredibly be the second Championship side playing in Europe next season. Birmingham were another side who suffered relegation on Sunday but following their Carling Cup victory a few months ago, they have also qualified for the Europa League.

Fulham for Europe?

May 16th, 2011

There is no doubt that Fulham are experiencing an extremely successful season, with the Craven Cottage outfit looking set for a top half finish as they occupy 8th position. However, despite this moderate success, nobody quite expected to hear the news that they could in fact be a surprise qualifier for the Europa League.

England sit in 2nd place in the UEFA Respect Fair Play Rankings, which means that they are allowed one extra place for the Europa League. The rankings are based on the disciplinary record for domestic and international competitions over the past season, with the top three countries having additional Europa League places awarded.

It has been revealed that the Cottagers sit 2nd in the English Fair Play Rankings, with Chelsea currently occupying top spot. However, with the Blues already in a European competition due to their top four finish, Fulham are next in line unless there is some sort of absurd turn of events next weekend.

If that does occur and Mark Hughes’ side find themselves completely on the wrong side of the referee, it could in fact be relegation-threatened Blackpool who take a European position. They and Tottenham are both next in line and even if the Seasiders are condemned to the Championship, they are still eligible for European football under the Fair Play rules.

Of course, it is not a huge surprise to see the Cottages plying their trade in a European competition. It was only last year that Roy Hodgson masterminded an unbelievable campaign that saw the club reach the Europa League final, where they were desperately unlucky as they crashed out through a late, extra time goal. However, if they do make it to the competition via this route, their task will be slightly harder as they will be forced to play eight games before reaching the group stages.

Sunday’s Premiership Roundup

May 15th, 2011

Just like yesterday, there wasn’t a huge schedule of Premiership matches yet plenty of drama still attacked the five games that took place. The title may have been wrapped up, but there is still plenty to decide ahead of the top flight finale next weekend.

The biggest game of the day came at the DW Stadium where Wigan hosted fellow-strugglers West Ham. The relegation situation appeared to have been completely turned on its head at one point as the visitors found themselves 2-0 up thanks to a brace from Demba Ba. However, the home side staged a remarkable comeback and after netting a last minute winner to claim a 3-2 victory, they confirmed West Ham’s relegation to the Championship. That result also sparked Avram Grant’s departure, as he was relieved of his duties just hours after the result.

Elsewhere, Birmingham still lay in big relegation trouble as they were soundly beaten 2-0 at home to Fulham. Two goals from defender Brede Hangeland secured the points for the Craven Cottage outfit, while Birmingham approach next weekend level on points with 18th place Blackpool.

At the other end of the table there was a fantastic result for Tottenham who breezed past Liverpool with a 2-0 win at Anfield. The result means that Spurs leapfrog their opponents into 4th place and with just one game remaining, they now look clear favorites for netting that Europa League place.

The final two games featured two sides out of the top four although really, neither had any significance. Arsenal had a shock result at home by going down 2-1 to Aston Villa, while 2nd place Chelsea were also halted as they were held 2-2 against Newcastle. Arsenal’s failure to win means that they can no longer net 2nd position and if results go against them next week, they could even finish the campaign in 4th spot.

Premiership Roundup

May 15th, 2011

There may have only been four games in the Premier League today, yet there was plenty of drama at both ends of the table as the day unfolded.

The biggest news of the day was undoubtedly at Ewood Park, where a struggling Blackburn outfit hosted a Manchester United side who knew they just needed the one point to secure a record-breaking 19th league title. However, it certainly wasn’t the fairytale finish as the home side took the lead in the first half following a Brett Emerton strike from close range. Just like many of their games on the road this year, United looked shaky yet they managed to get their point following Paul Robinson’s foul on Javier Hernandez in the penalty area. Wayne Rooney stepped up to dispatch the spot kick, and hand United their crown.

That result means that Blackburn still have it all to do as they approach the final game of the season, following wins for two other struggling sides. Wolves managed to comfortably come away from Sunderland with a 3-1 victory, while Blackpool produced a wonderful attacking display to beat Bolton 4-3 at Bloomfield Road. Unfortunately the Tangerines are still in the relegation zone due to goal difference and that means they will have to travel to Old Trafford on the final day of the season and get at least a point to have any hope of remaining in the division. From a more positive perspective for them, there are three other sides above them who can still realistically be relegated.

In other results, West Brom continued their late surge up the table as they managed a 1-0 victory over Everton. The result puts the Baggies 10th in the tables and once again emphasizes the managerial qualities of Roy Hodgson, who was only charged with the task of keeping an ailing Hawthorns outfit in the league when he took over just several months ago.

West Ham Parker Boost

May 11th, 2011

With just two games remaining and the club sat bottom of the league, there certainly isn’t much to smile about at West Ham. However, the Hammers have been handed a huge survival boost today with the news that influential midfielder and captain Scott Parker will be fit to return this weekend after an Achilles tendon injury.

Parker, who was named as Footballer of the Year just a few weeks ago, hasn’t featured in West Ham’s last four games and it would be fair to say that his absence has correlated with some dreadful form. Avram Grant’s men have picked up just one point from those games and with just two fixtures remaining, they have everything to do if they are to remain in the division.

The Upton Park outfit are currently four points adrift from safety although all is certainly not lost as the Hammers travel to take on fellow strugglers Wigan on Sunday. Victory there could take them within a point of survival as they enter the last game of the campaign.

Should Grant’s men fail to win, it looks all but certain that they will be playing Championship football next term. According to owner David Gold that could mean that several big names could leave and with Parker enjoying such individual success this year, there will be a queue of teams looking to snap him up.

That could mean a return to the very top for the former Charlton man, who has somewhat lost his way in recent years. Injuries have hindered him considerably but having finally got back on track at Upton Park, the 30-year-old could yet end his career on a high. He was the subject of a £10m move to Chelsea only seven years ago and if the very worst does happen to the Hammers, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see sides of a similar standing casting an eye over the England international.

Today in Premier League

October 4th, 2009

It was all blues at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-0 and regained the top spot in the league table. Though Chelsea had a better side on paper than Liverpool, it took Chelsea 60 minutes to actually prove that they were better than the reds on the pitch.

Drogba probably settled the debate for now, regarding who is the best striker in the Premier League. Both goals that Chelsea scored this afternoon were assisted by Drogba. Anelka scored the first and the second was added in the last minute by substitute Malouda. Liverpool hardly troubled the South Londoners as their star player Torres failed miserably.

Arsene Wenger got the perfect gift for completing 13 years as Arsenal’s boss in England’s Premier League. The North Londoners defeated Blackburn Rovers 6-2 at the Emirates. Fans were shocked when Zonzi scored the first goal for Blackburn inside 4 minutes. Vermaelen equalized in the 17th minute but Blackburn took the lead again in the 30th minute with a goal from Dunn.

Arsenal seemed in no mood of giving up as the last hour of the game saw 5 different Arsenal players getting on the score sheet. Persie and Arshavin scored before half time making sure that they go into break with a lead. Fabregas, Walcott and Bendtner did their bit for the afternoon in the second half.

Everton and West Ham managed to score a point at home this afternoon after a draw against Stoke City and Fulham respectively. The hammers equalized in the last minute against 10 men Fulham as Stanislas made sure that his club scored a point.

Premier League, La Liga and Serie A updates

October 3rd, 2009

Manchester United faced their first draw this season at the hands of Sunderland at Old Trafford. Sunderland opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Bent amazed Foster with his one touch bolt into the bottom left corner of the goal post. Second half saw an attacking United side. In the 51st minute Nani’s cross was curled in by a Berbatov scissor kick. Jones scored in the 58th minute giving back Sunderland their lead.

The match could have easily ended as United’s second loss this season if it was not for Anton Ferdinand’s own goal in the injury time of second half. Portsmouth scored their first points this season with a 0-1 away win over Wolves.

Tottenham Hotspurs came from behind twice in  match against Bolton Wanderers to register a 2-2 away draw. Burnley defeated Birmingham 2-1 in a match where two newly promoted clubs contested. Hull City kept their last week’s 1-6 drubbing  at the hands of Liverpool aside by registering a 2-1 home win over Wigan Athletic.

I don’t remember when was the last time Barelona had a 1-0 win at Camp Nou. Tonight they registered a 1-0 victory over Almeria. Tenerife were defeated 0-1 at home at the hands of Deportivo La Coruna whereas Atletico Madrid registered a 2 – 1 home win against Zaragoza.

Inter Milan were saved from humiliation when Sneijder scored the winner in the last minute of the home match against Udinese and gave the angry fans something to cheer for. The win took Inter to the top of the table with 16 points and a point clear to second placed Sampdoria who play their game tomorrow against Parma at home. Bari drew 0-0 against Catania, much to the home fans frustration as their team was unable to take the maximum points.

Today in Premier League

September 26th, 2009

Cheslea faced defeat for the first time this season at the JJB stadium playing against Wigan Athletic. Wigan opened score in the 16th minute with a header from Bramble. Chelsea equalized two minutes into the second half with a goal from Drogba but Wigan’s attempt to score in the 52nd minute saw Petr Cech bringing Rodallega down in the box. Cech was shown a straight red card which left reserve keeper Hilario with the job of saving the penalty. Rodallega stepped up and took the penalty which he netted comfortably, making the score 2-1.

Chelsea tried attacking, but with a man down there was always a fear of counter attack. Chelsea did not capitalize on the opportunities that came their way and were punished again in 90+2 minutes when Paul Scharner scored, giving Wigan their first win ever against one of the top 4 English clubs.

Manchester United defeated Stoke City 0-2. First half saw United making sloppy passes but soon Ferguson replaced Nani with Giggs which proved to be a master stroke as Giggs helped United to score both the goals. With assists from Giggs in both united goals, Berbatov and O’Shea scored a goal each in the 62nd and 77th minute.

Liverpool defeated Hull at Anfield with a thumping 6-1 lead. Torres took 3, Babel 2 and a goal from Gerrard saw Anfield live with action. 4 goals from Keane saw Spurs defeating Burnley 5-0 at home. Portsmouth continued their losing run as they faced their seventh consecutive defeat this season, this time at the hands of Everton.

Blackburn won against Aston Villa 2-1 in front of home fans. Birmingham and Fulham were not able to capitalize on their home advantage and lost 1-2 to Bolton, and 0-1 to Arsenal respectively.

Big Four through

September 24th, 2009

The renowned big four of the Barclays Premier League are through to the last 16 of the League Cup. Liverpool and Arsenal were already through the previous night, while Manchester United and Chelsea joined them the following tonight.

United were playing newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford in front of 51,000 supporters. Sir Alex Ferguson started the match with a 4-3-3 formation. Macheda, Welback and Owen had been allotted strikers positions. Carrick, Nani and Gibson covered the midfield, and the defense was formed by Neville, Brown, Evans and Fabio and Kuszczak adorned the goalies position.

The win didn’t come easy for United as they were left with 10 men in the 30th minute when Fabio was shown a straight red card for a foul on Kightly. Kightly was running straight towards the United goal post when Fabio came from behind and slipped in front of Kightly. Fabio was then seen bringing Kightly down with his hands and was red carded by referee Peter Walton. Ferguson soon replaced his young striker Macheda with young defender Ritchie De Laet to make the defense strong.

United kept attacking and finally the breakthrough came in the 66th minute with a superb one-two between Welbeck and Owen which saw Welbeck scoring his first goal in his first match this season for the club. The match ended at 1-0 for the home team.

In London, Kalou scored the only goal of the match in the 52nd minute which was enough to see Chelsea through to the next round. Neighbors, Tottenham Hotspurs defeated Preston North End 5-1, and Everton won 4-0 against Hull City. Extra time was needed to decide the result between Fulham and the big spenders of Premier League, Manchester City. The match ended 1-2 to City with Toure scoring the winner in the 111th minute. Villa is through to the next round as they defeated Cardiff City 1-0.
