Wilkins: Chelsea Should Keep Ancelotti

May 10th, 2011

Despite being the biggest challengers to Manchester United in the title race this season, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti’s future certainly seems to be away from Stamford Bridge. However, he has at least received some support today with the news that former assistant Ray Wilkins still thinks that he is the right man for the job.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Wilkins insisted that Chelsea weren’t far away from success and big changes weren’t necessary: “I don’t think it needs a radical change… but they certainly need new players to freshen the place up.

“Wholesale changes, starting from the coach, would be the wrong way to go.”

Wilkins of course is no stranger to the Blues, having been the club’s assistant for two years until being sacked last November. Having also spent considerable time as a player there, it would be fair to say that he knows the club pretty well.

However, while Wilkins knows Chelsea better than most, his suggestions seem likely to fall on deaf ears at Stamford Bridge. The club’s executives have hardly rallied around Ancelotti this season with one hinting a few months ago that the Italian’s position will be analysed at the end of the season. With Chelsea failing to land any silverware this campaign, it is widely though that this analysis will result in the former Milan boss being forced to clear his desk.

Speculation is already rife that Chelsea chiefs have been searching far and wide for his successor. The biggest rumour appears to be a return to Stamford Bridge for Guus Hiddink, who enjoyed a brief spell in charge of the club in 2009. However, with Roman Abramovich’s millions the Blues could virtually have anyone they like and while Ancelotti has proved a popular figure and has come within touching distance of success, it looks more and more likely that his rein is set to come to an end.

Match Day 10 – Coca Cola League Championship

September 29th, 2009

Midweek fixtures saw Newcastle United maintaining their position at the top of the table secure with 22 points in spite of not playing tonight. Their game is scheduled for tomorrow night. Second placed West Bromwich Albion had the chance to go to the top by defeating Barnsley, who are currently placed third from the bottom in the league table.

It was not WBA’s day, and they had to face an away defeat for the first time this season. The match ended 3-1 to the joy of home fans. Bristol City registered their 4th win this season with a 2-0 win over Blackpool. Cardiff City thrashed Derby County by 6-1 in front of home fans. Chopra who scored 4 goals for the night was by far the star of the match. Doncaster and Crystal Palace drew 0-0 against Swansea City, and Sheffield Wednesday, respectively at home.

Ipswich Town were looking for their first win this season against Sheffield United but the latter were successful in registering a dramatic draw from a match against Ipswich Town. Henderson opened the scoring for Sheffield United in the 9th minute but 3 goals from Ipswich Town saw the home team trailing 1-3 in the 70th minute. 7 minutes later Henderson scored another pulling one back for his team and a last minute equalizer from Morgan left everyone in disbelief.

Peterborough United and Preston North End were defeated 1-2 in front of the home fans by Plymouth Argyle, and Reading respectively. The away win gave bottom placed team Plymouth their first win this season.

Coventry City and Leicester City also manage to register away wins against Watford and Middlesbrough respectively. Coventry City came from a goal behind to register their second away win this season.

Liverpool v Burnley

September 10th, 2009

Rafa Benitez’ Liverpool side face Burnley at Anfield on Saturday afternoon as the English Premier League resumes after the enforced international break. Although Liverpool have made a stuttering start to the new season by their standards, the win away to Bolton last time out showed the character and determination of the current squad, and with a victory on Saturday the whole “bad start” thing will be well and truly put to bed.

A lot has been made of the fact that Liverpool have lost as many games in the first four encounters of this season’s campaign as they did in the whole of last season, and as such will not win the league because they have already shown weakness. This assumption by many pundits is actually quite laughable and you only have to look at the fact that Manchester United won the league last season while still losing four games during the campaign.

With most of the squad away on international duty, Benitez will only have one day to train with his team and formulate the tactics for the Burnley game. He will, though, be quietly confident that Liverpool can continue where they left off from the great 3-2 win at Bolton last time.
For their part, Burnley are showing two sides to this current campaign – the Burnley that play great at home (played two, won two, including against Man Utd), and the Burnley that plays away (played two, lost two, scored none, conceded five). Everything points to the fact, then, that Owen Coyle’s boys may find life a little too hot for their liking at Anfield on Saturday.

Blackburn v Wolves

September 10th, 2009

Blackburn Rovers host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Ewood Park on Saturday looking for their first win of the new Premier League season. Rover’s manager Sam Allardyce has not been too impressed by the start his team have made this season and will be looking at Saturday’s game to hopefully grab the three points on offer and kick-start their season.

Mick McCarthy’s Wolves team, on the other hand, have managed to win one game out of their four played so far this season, and with a draw and two defeats from the other three games, McCarthy knows that every single point his team can muster this season could prove to be vital come next May.
Blackburn have played one fewer game than their opponents on Saturday, with two defeats and one draw the total sum of their efforts.

They have only managed to score one goal as well and that was in the second game of the season in a 2-1 away defeat to Sunderland. Allardyce’s boys faced Manchester City at home on the opening day of the season, losing 2-0, while playing West ham at home last time out, only managing a tame 0-0 draw. They currently occupy 18th position in the league table with their one point; only Bolton and Portsmouth are below them, both pointless.

Wolves have played relatively well since their opening day 2-0 home defeat to West Ham. They followed that with a trip to Wigan, winning 2-0, then an unlucky narrow 1-0 defeat at Manchester City and last time out drew 1-1 at home with Hull. They are thirteenth in the table with four points to their name.

Will Manchester City enter top four in England

September 3rd, 2009

After spending £118 million this summer, Manchester City has kind of announced that they are serious contenders for this year’s title. But spending money is different than building a team. Though they have got the some of the best players available in the game, it will be interesting to see if City can even break the Premier League top 4 dead lock.

So far City has won all the three games they have played. But the next two matches will probably decide whether Manchester City is an actual contender. Their next two matches will be against Arsenal and Champions Manchester United back to back.

The start of the season saw Liverpool losing two games of the four they played. Pundits have already written off Liverpool’s chances of winning the title this year. Arsenal’s perfect start to the season was ruined by Manchester United when the latter defeated the former by 2-1 at Old Trafford. This left Arsenal with 6 points from three games.

Chelsea look good to go and win trophies this season but they have been banned by FIFA according to which they will not be able to sign any new player for the entire 2010 calendar year.

The only team that lack depth in the squad this season is Liverpool. After losing their star midfielder Xabi Alonso, the reds have found themselves pondering over the field without any game plan. So according to most it will be Benitez’s red army that will be toppled by Hughes’s blue army of Manchester.

Chelsea face big trouble

September 3rd, 2009

Today FIFA, governing body of football has punished the London based club Chelsea with a punishment which will not allow them to sign new players for the next two transfer windows. This means Chelsea will not be able to make any new signings during the entire 2010 year.

The transfer window in which Chelsea will not be able to get any players to North London will be the winter transfer window and the summer transfer window. The winter transfer window which remains open from 1st January 2010 to 31st January 2010 and the summer transfer window from 1st August 2010 to 31st August 2010.

This ruling can prove fatal for Chelsea’s dream of winning trophies this season as well as the next season. FIFA has reasons to believe that Chelsea encouraged 18 year old Gael Kakuta to leave his old club and sign a contract with the blues.

In 2001 at the age of 9 years, Gael started playing for RC Lens, a French League 1 club. Chelsea scouts saw the potential this young kid had and tried according to FIFA it was at this time Gael betrayed his club RC Lens and joined Chelsea.

According to FIFA, Chelsea will have to pay a fine of €130,000 to RC Lens and Gael will be banned for four months from playing any competitive matches. Along with that Gael will also have to pay a fine of €780,000 to his old club RC Lens for breaching contract.

Chelsea has denied the accusations by FIFA and are preparing to appear to the Court of Arbitration of Sports for justice. Chelsea feels the punishment will simply ruin their chances of winning any trophies this season and next season as well.

Red Devils dampen the Gunners winning streak

August 30th, 2009

The big game of the day saw the Gunners visiting Old Trafford. The match started a little slow as expected, but it was not late for it to pick up pace. In the 39th minute Arshavin was fouled by Fletcher in the penalty area, but referee Dean overlooked and strangely, no one appealed. A minute later, little man from Russia, Arshavin scored past Foster from 25 yards silencing Old Trafford. The second half saw a composed side. In the 59th minute Rooney was fouled by Arsenal keeper Almunia, and awarded a penalty which he conveniently converted making the score 1-1.

5 minutes later Diaby headed in his own net from a Ryan Giggs free kick which saw Old Trafford celebrate. Since that second goal, Arsenal became disorganized and allowed United to counter on many occasions. Berbatov and Nani each should have scored for the kind of chances they got. Later in injury time, Rooney gave away possession, as if he was passing the ball to his own team mate and Persie made the most of that courtesy by scoring a goal.

The goal was disallowed due to its offside status which left a celebrating Wenger furious at the officials. He was later asked to leave the pitch by the fourth official. The match ended 2-1 to Manchester United. The win left the champions at 3rd place in the league table.

Elsewhere in the premier league Blackburn drew 0-0 against West Ham United. Stoke continued their campaign with a win over Sunderland and Wolverhampton drawing 1-1 at home against Hull city.

Saturday Football at Premier League

August 30th, 2009

All of the so called big four of the English Premier League played today. Chelsea hosted Burnley at Stamford Bridge. The match ended with a 3-0 win to Chelsea with goals from Anelka, Ballack and Cole in the 45th, 47th and 52nd minute respectively. The win sends Chelsea to the top of the table with 12 points.

Tottenham won, 2-1 against Birmingham and kept an all wins record so far in the competition. Birmingham almost gave scared the London club but the Spurs managed to score a second goal five minutes before time, which was enough to give them the three points. Though the Spurs too have won all their games, they were ranked second behind Chelsea on goal difference.

Liverpool avoided a huge setback at the Reebok stadium and managed to pull out a win. All the goals conceded by Liverpool this season have been scored by set pieces. This was again proved right in the 33rd minute when Davies scored from a corner. Johnson scored 4 minutes before half time and kept the score 1-1 at half time. Two minutes into the second half saw Liverpool again conceding a goal from set piece, this time, from a Cohen header.

The match went Liverpool’s way when Sean Davis was shown a second yellow. Bolton was now a man down and it was difficult to keep the lid on Liverpool for another 35 minutes. Torres scored two minutes later, thereby leveling the scores, and then Gerrard scored in the 83rd minute, giving the Merseyside their much needed 3 points.

Chelsea v Burnley

August 28th, 2009

Chelsea host Burnley at Stamford Bridge this Saturday and will be hoping to make it four wins out of four so far this season. Burnley themselves are not doing too badly either, with six points out of a possible nine to their credit, including the now famous 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Turf Moor.

Chelsea have started off the season in fine form, promising a bright, new future under new boss Carlos Ancellotti. With maximum points from their first three games, they share top spot with fellow Londoners Tottenham, with Saturday’s game giving them every chance of sitting pretty at the top come Saturday evening.

Last Sunday Chelsea had the West London derby against Fulham to deal with, but came through the game with flying colours, leaving Roy Hodgson’s team to mull over a 2-0 defeat. With Didier Drogba and Nicholas Anelka the Blues two scorers, Ancellotti will be happy in the knowledge that his striking options have started the campaign on full throttle.

Burnley’s first foray back in the top flight for over thirty years has started better than they could have expected, especially as they have faced Manchester United and Everton in the first three games. The victory against United last week will probably be the Clarets most memorable game of the whole season but nevertheless puts them in good spirits for the rest of the campaign. They will have to be mindful however, that Hull City also started life in the top division well last season, but were almost relegated!

Bolton v Liverpool

August 28th, 2009

Two clubs in the grip of a “mini-crisis” go head to head at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday. Bolton, winless and pointless after two games of the current Premier League season take on the pre-season title favourites Liverpool, who look anything but at the moment. With two defeats from their first three games, the Reds have now lost as many games as they did in the entire 2008-09 campaign.

Although many point to Rafa Benitez’ decision to sell Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid in the summer as the catalyst for their poor form so far (although this could be a contributing factor), it is the once solid defence that are taking all the flak for the worrying displays, having conceded five goals in their first three games.

The lack of cash on offer for Benitez to buy a couple class players, despite the £30million received for Alonso, is all too evident, but to his credit the Liverpool boss is not using this as an excuse. Although too early to write off Liverpool’s chances of winning the league, they will have to improve dramatically if they don’t want to find themselves cut off from the leading pack.

Gary Megson’s Bolton are also struggling for form this season. In their first two games they have lost both 1-0; the first one at home to Sunderland on the opening day of the season, and the second away to Hull. They did enjoy a midweek victory – by 1-0 – away at Tranmere in the Carling Cup.
