August 31st, 2009

This week started with the game between Rangers and Hamilton at the Ibrox stadium. The Rangers went on to win the match with a 4-1 score sheet. Whittaker and Boyd both scored a goal in each half for Rangers. McLaughlin got a consolation goal for his team, late in the 87th minute. The defeat left Hamilton at the bottom of the table with no points.

Dundee United kept its unbeaten run this season by winning 2-1 in front of home fans against Falkirk. The game between Aberdeen and Motherwell ended in a goalless draw. St. Johnstone was playing Hearts who like St. Johnstone had not won a game this season. The match saw 4 goals and a total of 7 yellow cards. Champions League Playoffs – Wednesday night

August 28th, 2009

Wednesday night playoffs saw the final five teams joining 27 teams from Europe in the elite competition. The five teams that joined were Olympiacos FC, APOEL FC, Arsenal FC, VfB Stuttgartt and ACF Fiorentina. The first match saw Greek giants Olympiacos FC visiting Moldovian club FC Sheriff with a two goal advantage from the first leg. The Greeks looked comfortable throughout the match and were awarded with a goal in the 82nd minute. Kostas Mitroglou scored the only goal of the match and the match ended 0-1 to the Greek visitors. Olympiacos FC won the playoffs with a 3-0 aggregate score and qualified for the group stage of the Champions League.

In London, at the Emirates stadium, Scottish side Celtic had to score at least three goals to qualify for the group stage. Their hopes of qualifying were tarnished when Spanish referee Manuel Mejuto González awarded a penalty to the visitors when Eduardo dived in the penalty area. Television replays clearly showed that the Celtic keeper Artur Boruc had made no contact with Eduardo and he had dived unnecessarily. Eduardo converted the penalty and at half time the score was 1-0.

Eight minutes into the second half Eboue scored another one for Arsenal. Nothing was heading Celtic’s way and soon Arshavin scored the third of the night for Arsenal in the 74th minute. The night was looking gloomy for Celtic but they got a consolation goal in the injury period. Massimo Donati scored a stunner from nowhere with a cross from Andreas Hinkel.

Scottish Premier League: Who said Scots could only play Rugby ?

Scottish Premier League, presently known as Clydesdale Bank Premier League, is the most important football event in Scotland.

The tournament started in 1998 with 10 teams participating in it. The number of participating teams increased from 10 to 12 in the year 2000. This tournament is the most popular among all football events taking part in Scotland. Until now, the championship has gone to either Celtic FC or Rangers FC. These two teams are collectively known as Old firm teams. The rivalry between these two teams has not only made Scotland Premier league popular, but has also put Scotland in the world football map.

The structure of this tournament is such that it even makes other non-participating teams work hard. The best team in SFL (Scottish first Division League) replaces relegated teams in the league. This not only prompts the first division teams to perform well, but also makes the second division sides fight for place in SFL, hence improving the standard of Scottish football.

Scottish premier league is at present ranked tenth in UEFAs co-efficient ranking. The top two teams of SPL get qualified to UEFA champions league directly and two qualify for UEFA cup (third placed team and the winner of the Scottish cup).

Although football has never been widely popular in past, but after the arrival of Scottish premier League, it has been the widely watched not only in Scotland but also in other parts of the world. If you ever thought that Scottish people are only good at rugby, then you have something coming at you with their excellent skills and competitive nature.

Gretna In Search Of New Faces

December 14th, 2007

Gretna are stuck at the foot of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, managing only five points from 15 games, ten points in the rear of second to the last St. Mirren, and are gaping demotion straight at the face.

They yesterday announced that Manager Davie Irons will get rid of, either temporarily or permanently, 14 of their players at the end of this month.

During an interview with BBC, he said that they have to change things a bit since they want to generate attention and rouse movement among other clubs for some of their players. They will be using their saved money on wages to bring in some better players for the club. They will be bringing in one or two in exchange to three or four. He says they have to be creative.

Irons was not particular on who of the players are going to “move on” but merely said that “everyone was available at the right price”. The “moving” will depend on the performance of the players during the previous and future games. Irons said they have to prove their worth to help the club put scores on the board.

On a different note, Gretna is 11 points behind Kilmarnock but carried on a pitiable run of results of fall down to tenth spot. Both teams will be playing on Saturday and Kilmarock will be playing at home, so they will be expected to beat Gretna, which, on Iron’s words “will promise an interesting tie and will put a pressure on them”.

Gretna, In Trouble?

December 3rd, 2007

Although Gretna had built its foundations on the premise of a seemingly fairy tale club, built on self-style and eventually wanting to build an environment-friendly stadium, the important people who would make up the team remains on a low level. Although the Scottish government warrants financial support for the stadium, the low population of the playing members still makes things disappointing for Scottish football patrons.

Presently, Gretna had once again got its taste of defeat which unfortunately gave them their 12th loss out of 15 games. This is not in any way a positive sign but rather a warning that the team may be beginning to be out of its league. March 2008 seems to be a much dreaded month now, as the team may then finally be led out of its misery. The team is yet to taste any consecutive winnings ever since they entered in January 2007.

Mark McGhee, manager of Motherwell, finds it rather hard to express and admit that the Gretna team found present conditions as extremely difficult. The game would eventually eliminate those teams who have not been up to par in performance and sadly though, it looks like the exit calls for team Gretna. However, McGhee still recognizes the fact that the possibility should not dampen the Gretna team spirit. They should still continue hoping for a break to make it through this season.

Motherwell continues to be on the optimistic side. All thanks to Chris Innes gut judgment; Steven McGarry has been intercepted from hitting straight home. Unfortunately for team Gretna, the team suffered a lot from not making too much goals though they have gained much possession of the ball and have shown amazing foreplay on the field.

The game had been on the fair side a lot of times for team Gretna but interceptions have always defeated their opportunities of a goal. The other team kept on guessing their every move that no matter how well executed each play went, the ball eventually turned against Gretna. McGhee was not even able to manage his own frustration as he screamed out during the play. People were startled to see such display of emotion even louder than that of the school kids from Lanarkshire Primary School who were granted free entrance at the match. Still, a stroke of luck came for Gretna. A breakthrough had finally been given unto them two minutes just before the interval.

To try to set things more on their side, Gretna decided to make lead during the second half of the game by bringing in Ryan McGuffie as a replacement for James Grady. Unfortunately, the absence of cutting edge play still made itself obvious for the team as the home side was still able to double its lead against them during the hour.

Despite all odds being seemingly against Gretna, the team still managed to put out their best effort and tried to win the game. However, Clarkson and Porter continued to make an advantage out of Gretna’s loss of eventually scoring and keeping goal.
