Redknapp: It is always about winning trophies

February 25th, 2009

Harry Redknapp insisted that trophies were more important to him than European Football, as he has decided to field a second string squad in the UEFA Cup game against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Spurs boss will be resting all his first team players for the important Carling Cup final against Manchester United on Sunday.

Heurelho Gomes, Spurs keeper, is the only player to be expected for starting both UEFA Cup and Carling Cup encounters. Redknapp needs to play him in both the games, as Carlo Cudicini has picked up an injury in his knees.

Redknapp said, ‘It is always about winning trophies.’

‘I wouldn’t have been bothered by the fact if there was no existence of Europe and this is what I said to Portsmouth in the previous season before their European games.’

Meanwhile, David Bentley will be looking forward to make full use of the opportunities, which he will get in the last-32 tie against Ukraine Champions, Shakhtar. He was rested for the previous leg.

A good performance here might see Bentley grabbing a place in the Wembley showdown against the Red Devils.

For emphasizing his priorities, Redknapp seems adamant that Spurs will be playing against United with the spirit of winning the cup.

Spurs trails Donetsk 2-0 and needs to clear that deficit for staying in the Cup. However, Redknapp is not in the mood of losing out on senior players through injuries while chasing this tie.

‘Even though a final is not about reputation and all are equal, still playing against a club like Manchester United is always intimidating, as they are the best club in Europe. This is why I want all my best players to be in full fitness and fend off the Champions.’

Hull City Vs Tottenham Hotspurs: Late header from Woodgate seals it for Spurs

February 24th, 2009

Veteran defender, Jonathan Woodgate, came up with a goal five minutes from time and allowed the Spurs to snatch an important 2-1 victory over Hull City at the KC Stadium.

Woodgate was able to head a cross from Benoit Assou-Ekotto past Hull keeper, Matt Duke, in the final moments of a game, which had a combination of some scrappy and entertaining moments.

Midfielder Aaron Lennon broke the deadlock in the 17th minute for the away side with a sublime shot pass the Hull keeper.

However, Michael Turner, Hull defender, was able to scramble home an equalizer after ten minutes of Lennon’s strike.

This victory should ease the pressure for Spurs at the bottom of the Premier League table. Now, the Carling Cup finalists have lifted themselves to 14th position, only a point behind Hull and 5 points above the clubs in the relegation zone.

Hull City, who has only registered one win from their previous 17 games, is looking a completely different unit from the one that started the season.

Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp, Spurs’ boss, made as many as 10 changes to come up with a full-strength lineup after their UEFA Cup clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at Ukraine.

This week, Spurs will have to contend with Shakhtar for their second leg game at White hart Lane. Again, they also have a Wembley faceoff against Manchester United in the final of the Carling Cup.

However, getting full points from the Premier League game was the first thing in mind for Redknapp, which was evident with the changes that he made.

He would be looking for his side to come up with a similar performance in the games coming up and turn the tables on what has been a dreadful season for the Spurs.

Bent: I may look for other options in the coming future

February 18th, 2009

Darren Bent, England striker, is almost certain of going away from Tottenham Hotspurs, as he has been disappointed with the lack of chances that he’s been getting in the first-team.

Bent is getting frustrated with his life at White Hart Lane and the change of manager, which took place last year, did little to help his cause.

Under new manager, Harry Redknapp, the striker has been sparingly used, mainly as a substitute, in spite of him scoring more goals than Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey.

During an interview, Bent said, ‘I have spoken couple of times to the manager about my situation. However, I am only hearing the same thing all the times.’

‘I am not amongst those players, who can sit back and let their career pass by. I will bang on his door, till I’m heard.’

‘Yes, I am not completely left out of the squad. Still, at 25, there are a lot of things that can come from me as a player. I am not a finished article and can only get better with each opportunity given to me.’

‘I would love to see my improvement with the Spurs. However, if nothing happens here, may be I would look for other options at the end of the season.’

‘I need to have an actual part in the games, as I love playing football. I do not want another season, where I am going to be in and out of the team.’

‘I have scored quite a few times this season, especially when you consider that I haven’t been a regular member of the squad. So, I need to weigh up some more options in the coming future.’

5-0 drubbing takes Red Devils three points clear of Liverpool

January 28th, 2009

Manchester United thrashed West Brom 5-0 and moved three points clear of Liverpool on the Premier League Table.

During this crushing encounter, it was Edwin van der Sar, who made BPL history by surpassing Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech 2004-05 record of 925 minutes without conceding a single goal for his team.

United also set an all new record of 11 consecutive clean sheets breaking the one set by Chelsea four years back.

First half goals were scored by Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov following a typical blunder from Scott Carson.

The match saw a harsh decision from the referee with the West Brom acting skipper Paul Robinson being shown the ninth red card of his football career.

Later in the second half, United increased their lead with two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and one from Nemanja Vidic. This drubbing allowed the Red Devils to earn their sixth successive win in the league.

United’s crushing win over West Brom has increased the pressure over Liverpool, who have been plagued with poor performances and draws in the recent past. Reds next play Wigan on Wednesday and will be looking forward to close the gap with the current league leaders.

Elsewhere, Tottenham recorded their first Premier League win in over a month, as they defeated Stoke 3-1, courtesy a series of goals at White Hart Lane in the first half.

Aston Villa moved to the third spot in the Premier league table beating Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park. Emile Heskey scored his debut goal for Villa in the 20th minute of the game.

Again, Sunderland defeated Fulham 1-0 at the Theatre of Dreams and ended the club’s run of four Premier League defeats against them.

Spurs sign Cudicini on free transfer

January 26th, 2009

Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Carlo Cudicini, veteran goalkeeper from Chelsea, on free transfer.

Harry Redknapp, Spurs Manager, signed the 35-year-old keeper for competing with Heurelho Gomes, who is currently the first choice goalkeeper of the club. Gomes has been under serious criticism for his performance this season and may play second fiddle to Cudicini.

Italian International was a part of the Blues since 1999. He was the first choice for the club, till Petr Cech arrived in 2004.

Cudicini signed Chelsea on one-year loan deal from Castel di Sangro in 1999. However, he was permanently moved to the club in the next season following a summer transfer worth £160,000.

2002’s Blues’ player of the year, Cudicini, helped Chelsea in winning 2 league Cups, 2 FA Cups and 2 Premier League crowns.

Redknapp is hoping that inclusion of Cudicini may improve Spurs defensive record, which has been poor. Their defense has been one of the reasons why Spurs are currently plummeting 16th on the league table.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United is also looking forward to get some new faces in their squad for changing their fortune.

With speculations on future of Shay Given, Joey Barton and Charles N’Zogbia, Joe Kinnear is working hard to close in on at least one of his targets.

Kinnear already has Peter Lovenkrands, Denmark International, in his ranks and looking to add Toulouse’s Albin Ebondo and Rennes’ Stephane Mbia.

If Magpies need to make a comeback in the League, they will have to fill the areas, which currently have little or no cover.

Nani assures good form in second half of the Premier League

January 22nd, 2009

Nani, Manchester United winger, intends to continue the second half of the Premier League season in full flow and hopes to make a big impact by bringing glory for his team.

22-year-old Portuguese star has admitted to news sources that he really struggled to gain his form while playing for the Red Devils in the first half of the season.

However, he has regained his form and made a bright start in the New Year scoring through a spectacular strike against Derby in the Carling Cup on Tuesday.

His goal helped United to a victory against Derby and a place in the March 1 final at Wembley, where they face Tottenham, who secured the place after surviving a nail-biter against Burnley.

United winger is looking forward to the coming days, weeks and months with full of confidence.

In an exclusive Manchester Evening News, Nani said, ‘I was pleased with my contribution to United last season.’

‘I hope to do it even better this season. My aim is to give my best, as I have got my chances and I will do it from the very start of this year.’

Nani was hoping to be confident enough to score goals and do well in the latter part of the season. He said, ‘It is really difficult for a player to play one game and then go out of form for two matches. Everyone wants to have a positive form for a run of matches and I will look to have the same for myself.’

Woodgate: A big team may get relegated this season

December 28th, 2008

Jonathan Woodgate has a feeling that a big team might get relegated from Premier League this season. However, he is going to make sure that it’s not Tottenham.

Although Spurs has seen a revival under Redknapp and scored 18 points, since his appointment couple of month back.

However, they are still under pressure with two back-to-back losses against Newcastle United and Fulham.

Woodgate may return to Spurs side, after missing out with a back injury, for an important game against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

28-year-old Spurs said, ‘Situation in the league is very tight. Teams have been beating one another for a long time. At this moment, no side has any real form barring the top fives. Even, they have been dropping points.’

‘Form of the rest of the clubs has been inconsistent and there is an equal possibility of seeing a big team going down. We need to make sure that it’s not us by keep picking victories.’

Although the results may not show it, but Woodgate believes that Spurs have been playing well.

‘We have seen an incredible turnaround, but our current position in the League shows that it’s very difficult to come out of the relegation zone once you are in.’

‘Just take a look at our performance in the past couple of months and you are bound to notice the improvement. Still, we are far from getting out of the woods.’

‘When you are down, it’s tough to get back on feet as everyone else is winning. You need to keep on improving till you are completely out of the jail. However, we are displaying our true potential and what we can do.’

Tottenham Hotspurs Vs Manchester United: Clash of Managerial Greats sees fitting end

December 14th, 2008

Manchester United failed to overcome an advantage of closing the gap on Liverpool, as they failed to score full points against Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Keepers from both the side, Van der Sar & Heurelho Gomes, played a crucial role in this goalless draw and kept waiving off challenges from forwards.

However, it was a tough day for Dimitar Berbatov. He found it tough not only to hit the target, but also received a terrible response from his former home crowd, whom he abandoned for United on the final day of transfer.

The draw was a fitting end to the clash of the managerial greats, Sir Alex Ferguson & Harry Redknapp. Their respect for each other was visible in the end, when both of them hugged on the final whistle.

Earlier in the day, Liverpool came out of a disastrous two-goal deficit and scored a draw against Hull at Anfield.

Two goals from Gerrard in 8 minutes helped the Reds to cancel an own goal from Carraghar and a good finish from Paul McShane.

Arsenal also lost an advantage and their place from the Top Four, as they drew 1-1 against Middlesbrough at Riverside Stadium.

Aston Villa, who has been in great form this season, won 4-2 against Bolton to regain the fourth spot from the Gunners at Villa Park and extended their unbeaten run to 5-game.

Elsewhere at Eastlands, Everton continued their excellent away record this season, as they defeated Manchester City 1-0 with a late strike from Tim Cahill.

Caretaker boss, Ricky Sbragia, felt a relief after Sunderland scored a much needed 4-0 win against West Brom at the Stadium of Lights with a double strike from Kenwyne Jones.

Paul Ince’s miserable run continued, as Rovers slipped to another defeat against Wigan at the JJB Stadium. With their 3-0 win, Wigan moved into the top ten in the table, whereas their opponents slid further into the relegation zone.

Again, Fulham survived a scare, as they managed a scrappy goalless draw against newly-promoted Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

Redknapp: No plans to sale Pavlyuchenko

December 13th, 2008

Harry Redknapp rubbished all reports, which said that he has been planning to sell Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Reports released on Friday revealed that Spurs Boss was willing to sell his striker whenever transfer window reopens, as he hasn’t be impressed by the Russian’s performance.

After arriving from Spartak Moscow just before the transfer window closed, Pavlyuchenko has been able to score only 7 goals at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp insisted that he has got no plans of selling his forward, as he’s already falling short of strikers in his side.

‘That’s total rubbish,’ said Redknapp while speaking to a reporter. ‘I’ve got only 2 strikers available with me for Saturday’s game against Manchester United, as Fraizer Campbell is out with a calf strain.’

‘The 2 strikers, who will be playing, are Roman Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent. So how will I even think of offloading anyone?’

‘Pavlyuchenko is a talented player and it’s impossible for me to let go of him at this stage.’

Again, Redknapp admitted that the club didn’t have any specific transfer target in the coming transfer seasons.

‘We’re not ready to dive-in on players and pay huge some for them, as our chairman isn’t going to allow that.’

‘We just need to wait and watch. If clubs will ask for extortionate amount for their players, who interest us, we’ll ignore them.’

Meanwhile, Redknapp confirmed that former Spurs forward, Dimitar Berbatov, will not get abused similar to Sol Campbell earlier in the season.

He said ‘What happened on that day was different and will not be repeated. Yes, he can get some stick, which he should expect, but not to the extent of what Campbell received?’

Ferguson wants Fab Four in the same lineup

December 9th, 2008

Sir Alex Ferguson seems motivated for deploying all his attacking options in the same squad.

Manchester United Boss has a plethora of attacking options in his ranks. Likes of Cristiano Ronaldo,
Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov are sure to have no problems in walking into any side of the Premier League.

Now, the wily Scot is looking for methods of fitting his ‘Fab Four’ into the same squad without sacrificing on the defensive aspect of his side.

During an interview to the Sun, Ferguson said ‘I’ll wish to get it done, but it’s almost impossible.’

‘Each of these players is flexible enough for playing in any role that they’re given.’

‘It will surely make way for a formidable frontline. I’ve even been doodling continuously for trying to come up with ways, so that I can fit all of these players in the same lineup.’

If Ferguson finally figures a method for including all of them, Red Devil fans might be in for some treat. Final 30 minutes of their last game against Sunderland at Old Trafford did offer a glimpse of what can happen when all of these players will be on the field at the same time.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspurs continued their revival under Harry Redknapp, as they cruised to a 2-0 win over West Ham United at Upton Park.

Goals from defender Ledley King, who scored after 3 years, and Jamie O’Hara in the second half were enough for the Spurs to defeat the Hammers.
