Hodgson Appointed As New Fulham Coach
December 29, 2007
After his resignation as football team coach of the Finnish team, 60-year old Roy Hodgson has taken over Lawrie Sanchez who was dismissed as Fulham struggle third from the foot of the Premier League. He will be taking his place by the end of December, still with Ray Lewington in-charge of Saturday game against Birmingham City.
Last month, Hodgson announced that he has no plans of signing a new deal with the Finnish national team which he nearly guided to UEFA Euro 2008. He is now to guide Fulham away from the Premier League relegation zone.
In 1994, he became known for steering the Swiss national team during the 1994 World Cup and Euro 1996. Prior to that, Switzerland was not able to qualify for a big tournament since 1960. Apart from that, he has coached many prominent club sides, counting Blackburn Rovers, Copenhagen, Malmö FF, Internazionale, Grasshoppers, F.C. and Udinese.
Hodgson is an affiliate of the FIFA Technical Study Group (TSG) at the 2006 World Cup and has worked numerous times as a member of UEFA’s technical study group at the European Championships. He has served as a television expert in more than a few of the countries where which he has coached also.
Being in his 60’s, this will probably be the last time that Hodgson will be given the chance to prove his worth and talent as a coach. The Finnish team that he had just abandoned regrets losing a great coach such as Hodgson. Fulham, however, is looking forward to being steered away from the relegation line this season.
