Manchester United went into this match as heavy favorites. Getting some of their star players back United were at close to full strength. Although United had all ready made it through a win would put them in top position of the Group F table.
United got off to a bad start with Fernando Abel scoring in the 22nd minute of play gave the visitor, Sporting Lisbon the 1-0 lead at the halftime break.
At the halftime break Ferguson made a double substitution bringing Carlos Tevez and Ryan Giggs into the game. United leveled on the 60th minute of play when Cristiano Ronaldo was able to get weak shot away that hit Marian Had and rolled into the back of the net. Dispute is continuing that Carlo Tevez may have had the last touch naming him the goal scorer.
The game was coming to an end and the game was dead level and destined to be a draw, but Cristiano Ronaldo was able to strike a truly magnificent free-kick and put Manchester United up 2-1 in injury time.
