Parry: Gareth Barry is too expensive for Liverpool

Date August 14, 2008

Liverpool has reportedly stated that the transfer of Aston Villa Captain and midfielder, Gareth Barry, is getting more and more difficult to pursue, thanks to the player being too expensive, more or less in wake of the recent entry of Tottenham striker Robbie Keane.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry today said that getting Barry was one of the club’s priorities in the recent weeks. However, Aston Villa’s assessment of their long serving midfielder seems to be too high for a price to be quoted.

In a comical turn of events, last month, a bid for the midfielder by Liverpool was rejected by Villa just because they were about 15 minutes late than the already set deadline.

Last week, manager Martin o’Neill has stated that the Barry still wants to leave and join the squad at Anfield.

Liverpool’s American bosses seem to think that spending 20 million pounds on Keane has been too much and that any more ‘excess expenses’ need to be stopped and of course, the 18 million pound assessment of the player is too much for Liverpool.

The Gareth Barry saga has been a hot topic for discussion, but is often overshadowed by Manchester United’s Christiano Ronaldo and AC Milan’s Kaka, two players, who have also been a part of similar but incomplete transfer controversies. The only difference with Barry’s scenario being that this deal is still not closed and may complete very well.

Liverpool are now in a tight spot, as the season starts on the coming Saturday.

Both Liverpool and Aston Villa need to come to a mutually acceptable and benefiting deal before this transfer window closes!
