Premier League Authorities reject calls to fund police costs

Date August 14, 2008

In a recent press release, Premier League Authorities have stated that in order to meet the full cost of policing the league matches they have rejected all the calls for the twenty clubs, which participate in the league.

According to an investigation carried out by BBC Radio, the premier league authorities needed more than £7.5 million last season to police their games and they received a mere £4.35 million from the clubs. The rest of the money which was nearly £3.2million came from the local forces.

This investigation was carried out by including evidence from 13 of top 20 participating teams.

According to Mr. Dan Johnson, Premier League’s chief spokesman, the clubs should take the initiative to meet these extra costs through their tax contributions.

The official also added that as per the law, English clubs are responsible to pay for any type of policing inside the ground and even the immediate adjacent property on match days.

Premier league authorities mentioned that this principle was established long ago and this rule applies to all organizations and individuals residing in the U.K, be it private individuals, shopping centers or any type of major events like the Notting Hill Carnival.

They are sure that their clubs will work well with local police in order to make the best use of the resources available.

Mr. Johnson also felt happy after discussing on the new strategies that can be implemented to reduce further costs and helping the police to tackle youth crime in the coming future.
