Tottenham Hotspurs Vs Chelsea: Bent helps Spurs salvage a needed draw
September 1, 2008
Tottenham Hotspurs came out of the horrifying start to their season, which scripted two unforgettable defeats, by holding Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
The game saw a rejuvenated Juande Ramos side constantly worrying their opponent’s defense and eventually created the opportunity to run away with a point at the end of the game.
Chelsea, who had a great start to their season with comprehensive victories were taken aback by the attacking nature of their opponents.
Initially, Chelsea players including the likes of Joe Cole, Deco, Nicolas Anelka and Frank Lampard were constantly attacking the Spurs with many shots on their goal.
The deadline broke in the 27th minute when a Deco flick caught Belleti, who netted it to make 1-0 for the home side.
This was the first goal for the player, after he scored against the same team in a previous season’s encounter that ended 4-4.
However, the Blues were unable to hold on to the lead, as in the injury time of first half, Spurs striker Darren Bent went underneath Petr Cech to equalize for the away team.
The game saw many heated exchanges between the two sides and three yellow cards (Deco, Cole and Bosingwa) going to Chelsea.
Although the draw continued the impressive run of Scolari’s men at Stamford Bridge, it also announced the revival of a team, which was out of sort in the earlier games.
Meanwhile at Villa Park, Liverpool could only manage a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa and lost the opportunity to lead the table. Another game saw former Chelsea winger, Shaun Wright Phillips, score two goals as Manchester City dashed the hopes of Sunderland 3-0 at the Stadium of Lights.
